this is such a good movie

i've seen it now a dozen times in the past 20 years. and every time i see it, i love it. i never get tired of it.

much better than the big chill, diner, and any other coming-of-age, last-hurrah movie i can think of.

great performances by everyone involved...

okay, i'll stop gushing now. :)

I feel much like Tom Hanks felt in Pvt. Ryan. "I'll just keep this one for myself"

reply

Totally agree!!

I love how not many people know about this great movie. I like the fact that over the years, i have showed it to a select couple of friends, so they could enjoy it too!

With you on this one 100%! An absolutely incredible film. Can't remember when I first saw it, but know the second time I saw it so well. I was at work experience while I was at school, must have been 13 or 14, and watched it the night before for the second time, knowing how great it was going to be, and went in to the place I was doing WE at and heard two girls going on about this great film with Costner in it. They didn't know what it was called and most of the plot was incorrectly talked about, but all the while I'm sitting there all quiet, thinking "I know what its called, that bits not right, you've got that bit wrong, it's groovers not groovies..." But did I say anything? Did I hell!!! Like someone has said before- I'll keep that one for myself! One of my all time favourite films ever!

Does the dvd of 'Fandango' include the scene with the biker gang? This scene was in the tv network version years back but wasn't in the original theatrical release or the vhs version.

One of my all-time favorites. My friends and I even buried a bottle of rot-gut wine, not Dom, where we were living at the time, intending to dig it up years later. We never did, though.

Everything in the movie is perfect, the story, the casting, and the music.

Many good quotes that still crack me up when I think of them.

"It's a shame everyone doesn't know/love it" says Roy Munson 2004.Maybe this film isn't a classic like "Casablanca" for example, but it's a classic for all of us who loved it and will always have it in our hearts. And i got to admit that i'm surprised that so many people not just loved the film but defined their lives and their way of thinking.I'm one of those people and i'm really glad there are many others like me out there.Greetings to all of you "Fandango" fans, all over the world.

I was stationed at Randolph AFB in Texas right up the road from Austin in 1971 when the movie was supposed to have taken place. They had the music right on and the atmosphere really mirrored my impression of the area during that time period. I think this was the best role Kevin Costner has played in all of his career before he got jaded and went "hollywood".

reply

Roy,

It's buried in Chelmsford, Mass, about 17 years ago. Let me know if you need the exact location.

I watched it again last friday night. I'm still impressed with how good it is. I don't think I've liked Costner that much in anything else.

reply

I am so glad other people have seen this movie and like it. I think it is one of my favorite movies. Being from the Dallas area, I can appreciate the part where Truman goes down I-30 (I believe) to pick up the girl.

Ok, I'll cut Costner a little slack.

He was excellent in Fandango, Silverado, Field of Dreams, Dances with Wolves, and Open Range. And I kind of like Waterworld (but not necessarily because of him or his acting).

No, I haven't seen the two that you mention above.

reply

I always mention Fandango among my favorite movies and nobody ever has any idea what movie it is.

I'm riding a motorcycle from AZ to the panama canal starting may 7, as my last fandango before med school.

reply

Sounds like a great idea. I hope it's a fun, and safe trip.

It might sound cheesy but this movie actualy changed my life. Really. I've seing it for the first time when I was 13. And before I was a little girl who liked all little girls things ans films about sweet romance and then I saw this movie and it was like nothing I've seeing before. I was growing up in Russia and it was a year 1993. After that I saw lots of comming of age movies and went to many places and did many things - but this movie was always with me,in my head, and I always thought,"Well, this was a small movie that pushed me to write and to make short films and one day I'm gonna make my own "Fandango" film. And, so...I'm working on it.
And I'm sooo happy there are people in this world who love this movie the way I do and I just thought all these years I was the only one!!!

"Fandango" was on Aussie TV back in the 1990s late one night so I decided to give it a try. I'm so glad I did. For the first minute or two, I thought I was in for another "Porky's"-style teens-on-the-make raunchfest, but as the film went on, I just became more and more mesmerized. People always talk about chick flicks. Well, "Fandango" is a guy flick. I've never seen a better movie about mateship and the carefree abandon of youth. So many wonderful vignettes and set-pieces: the train/car incident, the fireworks "battle" in the graveyard, the sheer lunacy of the parachute school sequence ... it all works beautifully. And the ending is so bittersweet, it's just perfect. No wonder this is one of Tarantino's favourite flicks - he's a man who can recognize great screenwriting at fifty paces. No matter where I am or what I'm doing, if I hear Elton John's "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting" on the radio, I get goosebumps thinking of this movie. Love it love it love it. Hope we see a special edition DVD one day.

Put me on the list of people that absolutely love this movie.
It's certainly in my top 10 and maybe even in my top 5.
I'd be willing to bet the majority of guys here who love it are all around the same age now 36-40, and remember watching this in 1985 and being in highschool.
The movie isn't only great in it's own right, but brings back memories of that time in our lives.
I remember watching it when I was in Gr. 10, and I remember the girl I went out with, highschool sports, and different friends that I never think about under any other circumstances.
I especially love the music, my favourite being Blind Faith's "Can't Find My Way Back Home" at the closing credits.

I love this movie and I'm watching them getting ready for the wedding right now! LOL!

Crazy for Matthew McConaughey!

I'm 45 and I've loved this movie for over 20 years. I actually haven't watched it in about 10 years, but stumbling across the imdb listing, and this thread, has prompted me to dig up my VHS copy and watch it again. It'll make me feel 24 again.

reply

I'm with you there. This flick is my all-time favorite comedy. I've seen it about a dozen times and each time it makes me laugh. Few movies are worth watching over and over again, let alone funny every time. Watching Fandango makes me understand how my toddler feels when he knows I'm just about to tickle him. The film is a true masterpiece. It is somewhat disappointing to see it get such a low rating by users here, but that's just one more reason not to listen to what others have to say about a movie. I make up my own mind and I'm happy that I do. Otherwise, I'd miss true gems like this one.

No sex.... No nudity ... (Full moons don't count, do they?) No violence, (although it's alluded to off-screen with the Vietnam War)
No profanity .... No hate.... No "Gee Whiz" special effects and pyrotechnical orgasms ... Just humor, poigniance and a real depiction of our shared human experience of having to move on in life and leave behind some people and friendships that have helped to shape who we are.

To the critics (both professional and amateur) who can't see the timeless humanity in this story..... If loving the movie Fandango means I'm shallow...then I really enjoy the view from way down here....

"I'd rather burn in at 200 mph and have a few laughs" ......Truman Sparks

Shallow? Not in the least!
This is one of finest cinematic stories I've ever seen (see my comment under the handle jldmp1, for more).

While everyone who has posted comments here seems to appreciate the movie as much as I do, we must hold the minority opinion......When listed on tv showings it gets a 1 or 2 "star" rating.....It had practically no showing at theaters upon its release.....I had no luck finding it available at Blockbuster as a VHS rental...and it took 20 years before Warner finally made a DVD available.....???????????

Now that it is available on DVD, it may grow to become a "cult classic". I suppose this movie only "speaks" to those of us who can identify with it...and it's those who can't appreciate it that are the shallow ones. ;)

another piece of great music is the one heard when gardner asks the musicians for a "fandango". it's titled "it's for you" and performed by pat metheny. i'm 53 and portorican and shouldn't be liking this movie because we are worlds apart culturally. but i do: the train scene and the one where macintyre says "wow, he missed the mattress!" always crack me up. "can't find my way home" is one of my favorites since i saw the film. it is all so very well put together: acting, music, story, cast. portoricans also had to face the draft and were forced to go to viet-nam. as you may well know from your history class, puerto rico was invaded by usa in 1898 and has been since a colonial possesion where congress and the navy do whatever they want without telling the us taxpayer. so i can identify with what the characters go through. and, yes, i love the movie and it is one of my top 5.

regarding the "goofs" section,i'm almost certain i heard dorman's voice saying "we could get diseases".

reply

Judd Nelson says that line.

i'm mystified why this movie is never on tv... seems like it would
be huge on tbs or tnt... especially for the late-night crowd...

the parachute scene is one of the funniest i think i've seen in
any movie...

the characters are hilarious... and might even be both costner's
and judd nelson's best performances...
