? on draft notice remarks

Would someone please explain what exactly Costner is telling Robbards about their draft notices. I have listened to that scene over and over again and I can't quite understand what he's saying.

Thanks in advance.

i would love this explained too!

When there's a draft you are condisered ineligible if you are in college unless you don't maintain passing grades. Apparently, Gardner had not told the others that he too had received his draft notice for the same reason, not keeping up passing grades. If you listen to Phil in the party scene after Gardner and Waggener run out the door celebrating, he says "but you didn't even graduate". So the induction stops them from registering for another term in school and avoiding the draft that way.

What I don't understand is that Waggener is in graduation robes. It could be foolery but I'm wondering if it was an oversight.

reply

I took it that Gardner didn't graduate, but Phil, Waggener, Lester, & Dorman did.

Waggener was reading Gardner's draft notice, about not passing.

reply

Yeah but would they have drafted a new graduate? I don't really know.

reply

I don't really know. Maybe he didn't finish. Where I went to school, they allowed people to "graduate" with their class, if they had only one class left to finish, which they could take in the summer or the fall. We're probably putting too much thought into it, though.
