Yup ! I can see also how he was probably blown away by the use of popular music as background music to some key scenes (''Born to be wild'', ''Saturday", Pat Metheny's ''It's for you'' during the wedding), something which of course he himself does very often and quite well ...
(PLUS during the opening credits with the wild car ride, notice at one point how one of the guys is standing on top of the roof while strapped to it a la DEATHPROOF ;)
QT was on Howard Stern in the nineties and they were talking about movies that just came out, and WATERWORLD was out and getting bad press, and QT said something like, "But Costner's a great actor. Have you seen FANDANGO?"
