My trip to the filming locations

This past weekend a friend and I drove from California to Texas to see all the places where Fandango was filmed. It was quite an adventure. Here's a few of my pics from our trip. Screenshot on top, my pic on bottom.

More to come!

That's so cool; thanks for sharing these with the Board; I for one have really enjoyed seeing it. Oh to have a weekend free to drive from California to Texas! (I live in London, UK)!

Did you find the site where they "lassoed" the train? I've never heard exactly where that is. I figure it's either along U.S. 67 near Fort Stockton, or north of Pecos along a rail line that no longer exists (the Santa Fe line that ran from Clovis, N.M., to Pecos, Texas, but now only goes as far south as some mining area south of Carlsbad).

I've also been to the church in San Elizario. It's just southeast of El Paso.

reply

no, i don't know where that is. that would be hard to identify. but i do happen to knwo someone who may have that info. if i find out i'll post it here.

Evil is made possible by nothing more than the sanction you give it

reply

Thank you for the pictures. That must have been cool.

Anyone know where the airplane hangar skydiving scene was filmed? Was that near Marfa, TX?

reply

That was filmed at the former Rattlesnake Air Force base. It is located about 40 miles west of Odessa on Interstate 20. I was there on July 17th with Chuck Bush and Brian Cesak. There are several pictures in my album: http://s159.photobucket.com/albums/t160/Fandango-Fan/Ultimate-Fandango-July-2007/

Can you provide the areas where you took the pictures. I'm eager to journey there to see where one of my favorite films was shot.

reply

You can get a lot info on the locations here: http://ultimatefandango.com/info/locations.htm

We are planning another trip for July 2010. If you are interested, check out the message board at the ultimatefandago website. We have about a dozen people going so far.

Very cool! My husband proposed to me in Monahans, TX when we were on a cross-country road trip. I just noticed that Monahans is listed in the filming locations. Does anyone know which scenes were filmed there? This is one of my favorite movies and I never made the connection before!

reply

Monahans is where they filmed the dream sequence with Kevin Costner and Suzy Amis flying the kite.

reply

Thank you for that information! I really need to re-watch this. It has probably my favorite wedding scene of any film.

I'm guessing the aerial chase scenes.

reply

The aerial chase scenes were filmed west of Tulsa. That's supposed to be Dallas in the scene, but the river is too big for the Trinity. It's the Arkansas River near downtown Tulsa. Also, when Truman does the upside-down thing to re-read the sign, it has a Highway 48 on it with the exit leading to Cleveland and Bristow.

I've also assumed that the small town near the border was supposed to be Presidio, but it was filmed in San Elizario, Texas. I guess the road south towards Presidio was TX 17. But the scene where they found Chata Ortega's all burned out and abandoned was west of Pecos (not south, towards Fort Davis and Presidio) just off of I-20. I was out that way in 1993 and just happened to notice it. And I had no idea to even look, at the time.

reply

"I guess the road south towards Presidio was TX 17."

Actually, the road to Presidio is U.S. Highway 67, which connects to Marfa (about 60 miles north) at U.S. 90. I've driven along that stretch 9 times over the years. Southwest Texas (known as the Trans-Pecos region) is incredibly scenic. There aren't too many roads out there that I haven't been on. State Road 17 begins in Marfa and heads north to Fort Davis (on the eastern side of the scenic Davis Mountains) and continues across Interstate 10, then on to Pecos.

I watched this movie for the first time about two weeks ago (after reading where it was filmed). I really liked it, and it was great to see my favorite part of Texas again. I live in Florida (and have all my life) but I've seen more of West Texas, New Mexico and Arizona than my home state. I obviously lived out there in a previous life. It's just beautiful wide-open country that's made for cruising at about 80 miles an hour, and with a good soundtrack!

The scene where the guys dug up "Dom" looked instantly familiar. I had a feeling of where it was. When they showed the scene of Costner standing on the rock a few hundred feet above the Rio Grande I knew exactly where they were, as I have been there 9 times. It's the Big Hill, overlooking Madera Canyon on Ranch Road 170, which follows the Rio Grande between Presidio and Lajitas - among my favorite stretches of highway. One of my dozen trips to West Texas was in 1993. Last time I was out there was November of 1999, so I'm overdue for another visit.

I definitely need to get this DVD for my collection.

I like Fandango, but crazy about Giant. I made a trip in October 2012 to West Texas as I wanted to see where they filmed Giant.I drove from Houston (where I landed) to Marfa and it took me almost 3 days to arrive.I did not hurry and I stopped at very nice places such as Guadelope river, Ft. Davis and finally arrived in Marfa. My main interest was the location of the big gothic house which was one of the film's motives. I was assisted by the Marfa tourists office to receive the proprietor's permission to drive into the filming location. It was very exciting for me to drive towards the Evans house from Hwy 90, with all the desert around you, and suddenly I saw it standing firm , the remains of the facade they built for the Giant main outdoors shooting....

reply

"Giant" was a great movie. I haven't seen it in quite a few years. I need to revisit it. When I think that I've been through or stayed the night in Marfa 11 times over the years, I can't believe that I never took the time to visit the movie set. Next time I pass through Marfa I will make it a point to visit it.

The drive from Houston to Marfa is relaxing as well as scenic, and there are many great places to visit along the way. I've also driven along stretches of the Guadelupe River, especially near Kerrville, and the town of Fort Davis is a great place to visit and shop. Did you drive up into the Davis Mountains and catch the view from the McDonald Observatory atop Mt. Locke? It's at an elevation of nearly 6,800 feet, and offers an impressive 360 degreee view of the mountains and desert beyond.

Glad you had the opportunity to visit West Texas.

I think one of the emotions that this movie brings up is memories of the past, our youth etc.. It seems from your pictures that the past is even more dried up and deader than ever. Especially in the wedding site photo comparisons. What happened to the trees? They are all dried up and dead. Is this what global warming is doing?

reply

I live in San Elizario, two blocks from the church. The trees in the photo comparing the wedding scene then and now are different as some trees have been removed (obviously) and the remaining ones look dead and dried up - but they're not. The photo was taken in March, so the leaves haven't sprouted yet. They'll come out towards the beginning of April.

At this very moment while I type this, a movie crew has come in and are setting things up to shoot a movie scene. I'll see what more I can find out.
