Honestly, did you see the way the character just avoided thinking about losing his love until he saw her get off the plane?
How he keeps making fun, magical, scary, embarrassing moments for everyone but himself, and then sits back and watches, thinking he still has plenty of time for his life?
I loved that he got serious when he was about to lose Phil, so he was not a loony; but I think he considered himself a bit of a wizard, in getting around this life.
I say that because I recognize him.
And at almost 50, I realize, while fixing other people's lives and/or watching them, I forgot to have one of my own.
I write this only because I see this as what happens to Gardner.
One happy go lucky or slightly illegal, or dangerous, or exciting adventure after another.
But then one day, he'll wake up and say "please give me twenty more years, so I can live a life that other people will remember me as more than just a heck of a fun breeze that blew through, and kept going."
