It's a good story and premise, with a fairly sloppy end result. This would improve greatly with modern special affects.

It could potentially be a sequel/reboot , and just have another kid start having dreams about building it, but this time the aliens need our help for something. Just change it enough to be different.
shareI have to disagree man. This movie is a beautiful shmear of 80s cheez-whiz exactly as it is. It's a perfect time capsule for childhood of the era. Its aesthetics and 80s details are its best features. Imagining how a reboot would be made my face do this tbh: https://bit.ly/2rXHDnh
Also it bums me out that the endless onslaught of reboots Hollywood has been shitting out nearly exclusively for the past decade has people thinking about everything in terms of what should be rebooted. Why not come up with a new idea in a similar vein?
The ending kills it for me.
