i have explores dvd r1 and i live in wales

i have my copy of explorers on dvd, and it's region 1. i also live in cardiff in wales which is in the uk and not england. it cost me £8.99 and it's from a web site called loaded247.com. it is the actual dvd release and was released on the 6th of october 2004. to put people's minds to rest. the aspect ratio just says enhanced for 16:9 widescreen tv's and the sound is only dolby 5.1. the only extras are two deleated scenes which i have seen in the film everytime it's come on t.v. but anyway this movie rocks and the minute it started i could remember most of it.

p.s how cool is THE THUNDER ROAD?

What are the deleted scenes?

reply

The deleted scenes are Wolfgang being bullied and the Thunder road falling into the creek (which were in the original UK video release I have. Another lazy release from Paramount. No commentary or anything. Disappointing. I suppose we should be grateful they even bothered to release it in the first place.

Yeah the ratio is the 1:85:1 like most of Dante's movies. He must prefer it to letterbox.

Did you notice how the sphere they create isn't quite perfectly circular? they stuffed up the transfer! 3 kids with squashed heads fly around in an oval bubble... way to go Paramount! oh and they could have added the scenes back in like the UK VHS release rather than leaving them out as 'extras', would have saved me the hassle of re-authoring the disc with the scenes added back in and the aspect ratio corrected whilst also converting it to PAL format because the R2 release is apparently cancelled.

The film and extra scenes are both in anamorphic widescreen with 2.0 and 5.1 soundtracks.

BTW, did anyone else notice the dialogue change from the VHS & laserdisc releases? Heimlich the mouse says "go to hell" a couple of times instead of "I want my cheese" as in the laserdisc/VHS versions.

reply

that dialog was in the vhs version i rented from the libereary when i was a kid. "god damn you," and "go to hell" if memory serves. are you saying that it was taken out of the new release?

reply

As far as I can tell the US DVD release is the same (scenes/dialogue) as the laserdisc version, it's the UK VHS release that's different because it has the two extra scenes added in but without the Thunder Road in the classroom near the end and it's this version which has the slightly changed dialogue "I want my cheese" instead of "go to hell", which is strange considering it's rated "U" and has the fight scene with the elephantitus 'bloated and ugly like your ass' bit in.

IT SEEMS THAT A NEW VERSION OF THE FILM WAS SUBMITTED TO 'THE BRITISH BOARD OF FILM CLASSIFICATION' IN 2004 NOTING THAT IT WAS RE-EDITED AND IN WIDESCREEN. I ASSUME THE TWO SCENES WERE THEN RELEGATED TO THE EXTRAS SECTION OF THE DVD. IT IS BEYOND ME WHY THEY HAVE BEEN DISPLACED ESPECIALLY DUE TO THE NATURE OF THE LATTER PART OF THE 'WOLFGANG IS BULLIED' SCENE WHEN BEN (ETHAN HAWKE)SAYS HOW IF HE COULD SEE INTO LORI SWENSONS BEDROOM JUST ONCE.LATER IN THE FILM HE DOES. THIS SET'S IT UP. ALSO THE ASPECT RATIO ON THE DVD TRANSFER IS EXACTLY THE SAME AS ON THE ORIGINAL 1986 VIDEO RELEASE SO THE BUBBLE LOOKS RIGHT TO ME.

reply

The re-edit was simply the cutting out of the two scenes that had always been in the UK version, so they could get away with releasing the same version as in the US. Clearly, when they mastered the film in the US for DVD release, they didn't realise the UK/European version was different, so they had to re-submit it as an edited version. Which would explain the sudden confusion on the release date in the UK.

reply

The UK DVD is scene-by-scene identical to the US DVD including the extras, even the covers are almost identical. I think they just duplicated the original US home release when doing the US DVD and then copied that for the UK DVD.

When old films are re-released they have to be re-submitted to the BBFC for classification even if there aren't any modifications to the scenes/dialogue, because the original releases on VHS are almost always 4:3 pan&scan whilst the DVD releases are mostly widescreen and as such can contain extra picture information needed to be considered for classification.

The bubble isn't right on both releases of the DVD, it is an oval and I'm not the only one to notice this.

reply

FILMS ONLY HAVE TO BE RESUBMITTED TO THE BBFC IF THE FILM IS INHERENTLY DIFFERENT, EXTRA VALUE CONTENT ADDED OR A CHANGE OF FORMAT NESSESITATE IT. IN THIS CASE THE FILM IS A DIRECT TRANSFER FROM THE U.S.. THIS IS THE NORM THE MASTER USUALLY COMES FROM THE U.S. THIS IS NOT IN DISPUTE. BUT PLEASE CHECK THE ORIGINAL VHS RELEASE. THE BUBBLE IS THE SAME. I AM AWARE YOU ARE NOT THE ONLY ONE TO NOTICE THIS. BUT TO ME IF IT MATCHES THE ORIGINAL AND THE BUBBLE IS AS ROUND AS IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN (ON VIDEO) I HAVE NO PROBLEMS WITH IT. I HAVE CHECKED BOTH VERSIONS ON A PANASONIC WIDESCREEN FLAT TV. SETTINGS ON 16:9 AND 4:3. AND I FIND THE BUBBLE TO BE AS ACCURATE AS THE ORIGINAL VHS RENTAL RELEASE. CERTAINLY NOT AN OVAL. EXPLORERS BY THE WAY WAS ORIGINALLY RELEASED IN WIDESCREEN FORMAT (BORDERED). THIS WAS A CONTRACTUAL STIPULATION MADE BY JOE DANTE THAT HIS 1.85 (WIDESCREEN) RATIO FILMS BE RELEASED ON HOME VIDEO THIS WAY.
