Why no Sequel?

this movie did fairly good back in '85, and at the end of the movie its clear that they were creating openings for a sequel. such as the dream sequence at the end where they see a new circuit diagram that the aliens are "sending".

just curious why it never happened. this was such a great movie it deserved one!

Technically, the film bombed. It did respectably at the box office, but considering the high expectations, that wasn't really enough.

Also, Joe Dante said that the studio took the film from him when it wasn't finished because they decided to move up the release date. So he was never satisfied with the final release, as he felt it wasn't complete. Which might have stopped him from considering making a sequel.

I remember seeing an interview with Ethan Hawke only a few years ago where he was saying when he got cast in Explorers they told him the film was going to make all of them huge stars, blah, blah, blah. Then he said it flopped. I never knew it did so bad but it did. I remember going to see it opening weekend and it wasn't very crowded.

Well even if it flopped I think there should be a STV (Straight To Video) Sequel. Where the kids of Amanda's and Ethan's Charactors get to see the Kids of the Alein kids.

Wouldn't be the same without River Phoenix, even if they recast Wolfgang.

Jason Presson has all but disappeared from public view in the last 15 years, and what he did appear in during that time, he was usually little more than a background character.
