How did Darren escape Steve Jackson and his thugs?

Is this explained better in the novel? In the film Darren is being chased by Steven Jackson and his thugs, looks like 5 or 6 guys after him, but then the next scene cuts to a very calm acting Darren fixing up his little bike and getting ready to leave school. What happened in between? Wouldn't Jackson and his thugs still be looking for Darren?

this is actually explained in the novel. Darren pulls a fire alarm in the school and is grabbed by a teacher. There is no real explanation as to why he's not being attacked after school by jackson's buddies, tho.

The novel was actually pretty good. It explained a lot of the inner thoughts of the characters and presented the aliens better. I remember the ending being better than the movie but I can't for the life of me recall exactly why :)

I always took the conversation between Ben and Darren afterward to be somewhat of an explination. When he is telling Bed that his father had taught him to run, and could no longer catch him. After that, I always figured he outran them and got away. Jackson and his thugs didn't seem to be the brightest bunch, so I never wondered why they didn't look for him by his bike.
