Ok, here's where the cut scenes might've come in handy:

1) The guy with the helicopter tracked the boys down (there's a cut scene with him discovering Wolfgang's brother in the ship, and finding Ben's jacket). When he sees the ship lift off he realises the Boys have succeeded in doing what he always wanted to do, and he says "way to go kid", meaning he knew it was Ben (which was all he wanted to know anyway) and that he wasn't going to pursue him any further because he understood.

2) In another cut scene, when the Boys are back at school, Steve Jackson hassles them, and grabs the diamond gift. He drops it, and then all his clothes disappear. He has to run away in shame, which ties into Wolfgang's statement earlier on in the film about dreaming he was naked, and the Alien's comment "it's the stuff that dreams are made of".

I am not familiar with the second scene that you mention. However, I always took it that the green gem was what the aliens used to send the dreams to Ben. Hence how he uses it at school to bring Lori into his dreams over the circuit boards.

You're absolutely right, I was mixing the two gifts up.

Ben's gift was 'the stuff that dreams are made of', hence the appearance of Lori in Ben's final flying dream. It also applies to Wolfgang though, since his dreams were about running through the school naked, which, in the cut scene, was what happened to Steve Jackson.

Although, in the final film, the Wolfgang gift became redundant since we don't see the whole Steve Jackson thing.

I hide in your closet....I hide in your basement....I hide under your bed.

There is a novelisation of the film by George Gipe. There is also a large picture book simply called 'The Explorers Storybook'. Both of them were clearly done before the final cut of the film, as they contain scenes that never made it in to the film. The Storybook also contains pictures of the cut scenes.

Where can I get these books?

reply

Well, they were released as tie-ins to the film at the time, so they're pretty scarce. They do occasionally turn up on ebay though: www.ebay.com

There are 93 copies of the novelisation available at http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/offer-listing/0671601733//002-7487320-1203238?condition=all, starting from a penny (not including p&p, obviously).

There also seems to be two editions of the storybook available, one at http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/offer-listing/0671602616//002-7487320-1203238?condition=all, which has 12 copies, starting at $1.24; and another at http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/offer-listing/0006926126//002-7487320-1203238?condition=all, which has 3 copies, starting at $19.99.
