the aliens?

this was my favourite movie when i was a kid. its exactly what i had dreams of doing and i thought the premise of it was entirely possible, i watched this film a million times, from the fun making of the bubble ship thing and trying it out to getting into a space ship and finding strange robot things that take your picture its so cool. right up until we see the aliens. was directing taken over at that point or something?? after that it was ridiculous! they look and act so stupid, they do comedy acts based on things they watch on tv?!? and then we find out theyre the kids and the dad is just like an angry human dad but with added comical sounds! and then they just fall back to earth into the sea and abandon it. its still my best childhood movie but who else thought the aliens ruined it a little bit?

I agree with you completely. When I saw this as a child the aliens were rather cool, but on reflection I'd rather the aliens weren't shown at all. I guess this type of movie has no way of offering a satisfying conclusion. I'd rather the movie took the route of movies like "Cube" or "Contact", where the mystery remains exactly that. The first two thirds of this movie is pure brilliance, an easy 10/10, capturing the sense of awe and wonder of childhood and those who dare to dream, but the last third feels like a cop out. I get the feeling Dante and co had no idea how to end it. In fact, the last third feels like a completely different movie and betrays what preceeded it, making it almost unwatchable!
