I was showing this movie to the youngsters and I eagerly awaited the scene where the boys are pushing the tilt-a-whirl up the street and it ends up rolling backwards on its own as the circus music plays, but to my disappointment the scene was absent from the movie! My friends who had seen the movie in the past could not recall the scene I was describing and figured I was thinking of a different movie, but having just seen Explorers on TV a couple of years ago I know the scene belongs to this film. So what the hell, why was this scene absent from my DVD?
It was included as a special feature on the disc. It was always present on the UK release of the film, but not on the US release. All DVD's are now the US version with two different scenes (including the tilt-a-whirl) as bonus features.
I personally remember two scenes being in the theatrical version that I never saw again, not on cable, not on rental, not on TV edits.
The first missing scene is near the beginning of the movie. In this scene while walking to school the next morning, after having his dream, Ben gives Wolfgang the plans he drew (Ben is walking his bike). The bully (who later fights Ben after school) runs up behind Wolfgang grabbing the back of his pants and tearing them to where half his pants are hanging off of him in front of the other kids walking to school who proceed to point and laugh at him, (much like the dream Wolfgang said he was having the night before). Wolfgang cries, "I'm going home and telling my mother I'm sick" or "I'm suddenly not feeling well, I'm going home", and then runs home.
This is what sets up the after school scene in which Wolfgangs mother says, upon inviting Ben and Darren into her home, "Wolfgang is feeling much better now". And explains why Wolfgang had all day to work on the "plans" while the other two were at school all day.
The second missing scene is, of course, the infamous tilt-a-whirl rolling down the steep street grade and crashing into, or ping-ponging off of, the cars parked on the street.
Both of these were in the version playing in the theater the summer this movie was released, as I did go watch the movie more than once at the theater. I also remember distinctly their absence from later versions as those were probably the most comedic scenes in the first 2/3 of the movie.
I've just always wondered why they cut both of those, maybe seeing River Phoenix partially in his tidy-whiteys was a bit too much for a kids movie, but cutting the second never made any sense to me.
Both those scenes were in the theatrical version, and both were in the UK video release. The US video release was called the 'Special Home Video Version' and had some minor edits: Both the aforementioned scenes were cut; and a scene was added at the end where Ben is dreaming he's in the classroom, sees the Thunder Road in the corner of the room, approaches it, and it then cuts to the end pre-credit flying sequence. This scene was not in the theatrical version nor in the UK video version, but it's now in the DVD release. The two cut scenes are also on the DVD as special features.
