I was wondering if anybody had a copy of the COMPLETE isolated film score for EXPLORERS (no other sound effects, no foley, no dialouge) I am aware there is an Out of print soundtrack that was released on LP and CD; in fact, I own the CD and wouldn't part with it for anything, but there are SEVERAL music cues that are completely missing from the album release. I am doing my best to track down the COMPLETE score, if it exists. Thanks.
Important cues (in my opinion) completely MISSING from the soundtrack album release of EXPLORERS:
-The opening titles music (aerial shot of town, title logo flying at screen)
-The music underscoring the scene when the three kids decide to name the ship the ThunderRoad before the first flight.
-Repeated "sad" Explorers theme played several times throughout the second half of the movie in different arrangements, including -After the first ThunderRoad flight when the kids are at odds ("But we have our own spaceship")/ Helicopter landing -Helicopter pilot on phone talking about his dreams, sequeys into Ben's dream sequence -Helicopter pilot discovers ThunderRoad in the creek, and finds Ben's jacket.
-The ENTIRE ending sequence when the boys are flying home at the end of the film, the ship crashes in the lake and sinks, and the boys watch sadly and leave/ the boys on the hillside wondering what their space friends are up to.
All very important ques in the film, all missing from the album release. With all these "EXPANDED" editions being released all the time, lets hope EXPLORERS gets noticed and we'll get all the great music.
Glad I'm not the only fan of this film's music. I just found an unofficial CD release of an expanded collection of tracks from the score at a sci-fi convention. Unfortunately, it still misses several noteable cues. Nevertheless, in comparison to the official release, you get these extras: Main Title, Electronic Dreams (the first dream), The Brawl, New Friends, Up on the Roof, The Official Document, The Junkyard, Thunder Road (when they christen it), Stargazing (possibly an unused cue), Plans & Diagrams (aftermath of the second dream), The Discovery (oxygen), The Tunnel (another unfamiliar cue), Secrets (yet another brief and possibly unused cue), and Little Richard's version of All Around the World. Everything else is as it was presented on the official release version, with the Robert Palmer version of All Around the World excluded. It was "released" by a label called Soundtrack Archives in 2002. It's obviously out there, so check around various conventions and soundtrack collector websites and you'll probably get it.
I've been searching around and having no luck finding an unofficial CD release with the expanded collection. I'm not doubting something like this is out there. Much like I'm not doubting the original orchestral recording is out there (sealed in a studio vault). But how accessible is it? What sci-fi convention did you attend?
Bwennny- I found the CD at a Star Trek/sci-fi convention in Pasadena. The seller would not give me his business address, so I knew it was a bootleg. Still, it was neat to find it, even though it didn't constitute a "complete" compilation of the score. I doubt Paramount has an archive recording of the full recorded score, but it's a foregone conclusion they would have various soundtrack masters with just the music, effects, or dialog for the theatrical prints. Basically, if they wanted to release EXPLORERS in, say France, they'd have to have just the music and effects tracks to play under any French-language dubbing that would potentially be recorded for an overseas version. These tracks might be useable for a music score CD release, but since EXPLORERS is viewed today as an '80s curio, I'm pretty sure you'd have to go through private collectors to find such a compilation. I've seen other CD versions mentioned on the internet, some of which contain more tracks than the CD I found! Keep looking!
I can't help you with the songs you're looking for, but I found this interesting... We were at Walt Disney World recently and in line for a new ride they have called "Soarin'". Jerry Goldsmith did the score for the ride before he died. When we were in line, I noticed a familiar song playing in the background... It was from EXPLORERS!!! I though that was cool! I'm not sure what the title was. (It's definately on the soundtrack CD, though.)
Do you remember when the show "Sliders" first started and they used the main title ("The Construction") theme from "Explorers" during the opening credits? I think they only used it a couple of times during the first season. It was good to hear such a great theme back in use.
A complete soundtrack of the score was released by INTRADA in 2011. Unfortunately it was limited to 3,000 pressings and sold out very quickly. However, you can find it on eBay for around $100. Just make sure it is the INTRADA release you are purchasing and not the Varese Sarabande release.
