What Actually Happens To Daryl After Ejecting?

After Daryl ejects from the jet and lands in the lake, we are led to believe that he didn't survive the ordeal and for all intents and purposes he didn't. However, when the female government doctor comes to visit him, she says, "I know you can hear me Daryl" and starts to open up a briefcase of some sort. So, did Darly actually die in the accident or what? Was his programming somehow keeping him dead because that's what should have happened to a normal boy? I've read on the Wikipedia article on "D.A.R.Y.L" that he did die and the doctor had to revive his electronic brain.
