Does anybody think there should be a remake of DARYL? Are audiences better equiped (in terms of understanding some of the unusual issues that come up) these days to watch and enjoy it? Who would you cast> CGI, or none? Just some questions,
Even if I think it would be fun to see somme 80s film remade (Flight of the navigator)I dont really want them to touch this one because the 80s element in my opinion is one of the film biggest charm + today's kids are not inocent enough to enjoy that quind of story they would want more action, more special effect, more explotion and I beleive that film was more about the emotions than the special effects. Films like that just dosnt work in todays world, look what happened to A.I.
I don't think they should re-make this film, just release a two-disc DVD special edition director's cut. (there are extra scenes hiding in a studio somewhere.)
If they decided to re-make it, casting who would be Daryl would be the key to the whole film. whoever got the part would be compared to Barret Oliver, of course he is Daryl, he became an "expensive piece of hardware." as he told Dr. Stewart "You gave me everything too, You made me what I am." I don't think there is another "Daryl" out there.
when they made this film, they knew that Daryl was the central character and if we don't get it right, the film will not be successful with the audience. as it stands Barret Oliver did an excellent protrayal of Daryl, he was brillant in that film. they never did a sequel, but i did see him striking out at baseball as David in "Cocoon 2" and it was good to see "Daryl" as a teenager, but he wasn't playing that character, but it showed how much he had grown-up since then.
going by the re-makes of alot of films/tv series, some of them are nowhere near their originals, and have even turned them into a joke. I'm not going to list them, because you all know what ones they are.
Don't re-make, just release a Directors Cut DVD of "D.A.R.Y.L."
I hate to say it, but after 2001, if they did do a remake the new "Daryl" will not be able to "learn" to fly from the pilots. Before 'that' day, you could.
You raise some good points about why a remake couldn't work. However, I'm going to disagree that they *couldn't* (whether they *should*, or not, is another matter). About 9/11, it is possible that: a) The movie would stil be "set" in the '80s, so that restriction doesn't come up, or b) since it is a small, known group on the plane, that restriction isn't enforced. Remmber it was just the two scientists and Daryl. Also, I think that restriction only aplies to comercial aircraft, which a business jet, like the one they flew in, wasn't. Later,
I don't know why Daryl would not be able to "learn" to fly from the pilots. As I recall (I may be wrong), they took a private jet as opposed to a commercial flight. I'm not absolutely sure since I haven't flown in a private aircraft since 2000, but I don't think that they have the same restrictions concerning cockpit access.
I NEVER want to see a remake of this film. I watched so many times as a kid that as soon as I saw the DVD I had to buy it. This is one of the low-budget sappy kind of 80's movie that worked, and if a high-tech high-budget remake was made, it would lose most if not all its original charm.
I strongly agree. D.A.R.Y.L. should not be remade. It's one of my favorite movies from childhood. This one and flight of the Navigator. With the way they are remaking kids movies, it would just be about the special effects and not about Daryl's efforts to understand how to fit in with society. That line about the taste of ice cream, or how kids need to mess up so parents feel important, is so fresh in my mind, they still bring a smile to my lips and I have not watched the movie in ages.
They actually did what looked like a Darryl remake in a way "A.I" and it was a flop at the box ofice so I dont think they'll try to remake Daryl. By the way I love both Daryl and A.I.
