Is there a Widescreen version???

I have never seen the film, i see that its Panavison and it seems all DVDS are full frame. if thats so then half of the picture is removed from the sides and it would shift left and right so my quesition is, is there a Widescreen version anywhere??

reply

I've been looking for one, but so far to no avail. The version released here in the UK is a full-frame VHS transfer (complete with dropouts). Whilst this may appeal to 80's video nostalgia buffs, it remains frustrating to those of us who want to see the vision of a director - even one as hack as William Malone, bless him - perfectly preserved in our humble homes. Saying that, it is dirt cheap, and will do for a quick fix. For best results, view with pizza, beer and a side order of tongue-in-cheek!

I finally broke down and bought the $6 copy they had gathering dust down at the CD Shop. Despite being Pan & Scan, it's still good clean B-Movie fun. That said, if they ever release a Widescreen version (with a better transfer!) I'll be all over it so fast that the annoying security tape glue won't have time to set!

I saw this in a theater back in '85, and it was 2:35.1, I would definitely recommend to Anchor Bay or even moreso, Blue Underground...they really go all out in finding the original master prints of these B-film gems.

I know that "Creature" is on Laserdisc, but that is also pan & scan. But that is probably the cleanest version available right now.

www.fleshwoundvideo.com has an Region 1 uncut widescreen DVD for sale, only $15 too I think.

Anyone have that version they're selling at Flesh Wound, was wondering about the quality and if it has the proper aspect ratio?

reply

I just bought the Fleshwound video dvd, the only portion that is in widescreen aspect ratio is the first 2 minutes until it cuts to the guy with the beard in the space station that gets hit by the ship at the beginning. The quality is worse than the official dvd releases, it is pixellated and green tinted. Also, and most importantly, the dvd has UNREMOVABLE japanese subtitles which the website does not tell you before you buy it. In some cases, these subtitles take up literally half the screen, extending for several lines of text one below another.

I don't think a movie being Panavision means widescreen anymore. I believe Panavision is just the type of camera being used, like a name brand. If you see the words Cinemascope or Scope it's usually the 2.35:1 aspect ratio.

There are a tons of movies and television shows that have the Panavision logo in the credits and they are shown full frame or in the 1.85:1 Flat aspect ratio.

reply

While this may be true...

"Filmed WITH Panavision Cameras and Lesnes" generally means they used Panavision, but did not shoot anamporphically.

"Filmed IN Panavision" generally means they shot anamorphic.

Plus...this film was anamporphic. They made a big deal about spending half the budget to get that 2.35, classy anamprophic look.

I am the sucker who ordered the fleshwoundvideo.com version.
It's anamorphic, starts close to 2.35:1, with HUGE JAP SUBTITLES that can't be removed (it doesn't say that on the site). Then after the titles, it's 1.85:1.
So, probly from laserdisc, therefore fake or useless anamorphic (you can tell it wasn't originally), and it's no better than the VHS quality.

Sounds like you do indeed have a DVD that is mastered from the Japanese Laserdisc source.

As far as I am aware, apart from the fleshwoundvideo DVD, the only way to view this film in Widescreen is indeed on Japanese Laserdisc. The US Laserdisc release is Pan & Scan, the Jap one is 1.85:1 with the opening credits in 2.35:1 as you stated. So I guess the fleshwound DVD is mastered from that source. And on LD, the subs are hard coded so that would explain why they are there.

The quality of the Japanese LD is pretty good (when viewed on an LD player), much better than the DVD's - some of the Pan & Scan DVD releases look like they have been mastered from VHS tape. This movie is crying out for a quality release!

I just compared the two versions - my old DVD is on Classic Creature Movies, with 2 others, and looks like VHS.

The fleshwoundvideo DVD has very slightly better sharpness, brightness, contrast - barely noticable - (but that old slight green tinge effect).
Sound has twice the volume, about the same quality, and both versions are stereo or surround I think.
Also, the old one has a white Creature static title card, the new has red, two halves up close that zoom out as they join. The music in both there is identical (the first bit that's not like A .... L .... I .... E .... N !)

The Fleshwoundvideo site said 10/10 pic quality - DVD or Laserdisc quality they say. More like 7 or 8.

Fred Olen Ray's Retromedia is currently working with Bill Malone to get a proper DVD widescreen release. For more info, head over to his site's message board for updates.

Yeh. I emailed last night.

It's getting a release on dvd on 23/03/09 here in the uk, region 2.. Not sure what ratio it is though, it doesn't say. Here is the link I found: http://www.play.com/DVD/DVD/4-/8115758/-/Product.html?searchstring=the+titan+find&searchsource=0

I have an old worn out VHS of this film and was wondering myself, as mine is a pan & scan job and it is a bit irritating.

Well I'll be an alien's uncle.
Under the title Titan Find. Sure it's not Titanic and a misprint?

It's also on Amazon.co.uk.
With no aspect ratio specs, it would probably mean none to mention.

Done by Studio: TRTFC
Search them and they have done:
Plan 9 from Outer Space
Jesse James Meets Frankenstein's Daughter
and 5 other cheapies. http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_ss_d_h_?url=search-alias%3Ddvd&fi eld-keywords=TRTFC&x=17&y=16

I wouldn't be surprised if it's the same budget full screen VHS print of the US Creature DVD.

Is Creature in the Public Domain? I have read stories but have not been able to confirm it. And seeing the same pan and scan print (with the exception of the Japanese laserdisc/now DVD that is NOT in the proper aspect ratio) appear on many DVD collections makes me think it is. I own a nice 35mm scope print of Creature and would love to get it converted to HD (for the 16:9, it does not cost that much to get converted less then $3,000) and maybe finding a way of releasing it. Can't do that with a movie that still has a copyright.

UPDATE

The Uncut Anamorphic 16x9 Widescreen version can be found on DVD via the attached link bellow..

http://www.fleshwoundvideo.com/C.html

This comes as a shame to me, seeing as I just recently purchased the crappy full-screen half-asked VHS transfer on DVD, which might I add was a faulty copy.

reply

sorry, but whats the sense of this? we all talked about this dvd from the beginning...

i'm still hoping for an official widerscreen-release!

I emailed Code Red about this flick a few weeks ago, as a suggestion for something I'd love to see on DVD, and they got back to me and said MGM currently owns the rights to it.

The Director's Cut was just released on DVD in widescreen. I just got it today in the mail. Pic's for the DVD and screen caps can be seen here, https://picasaweb.google.com/111004313467739967218/TitanFind02

I just recently picked up a copy too and it's a decent looking transfer. Tried watching the commentary the other night, but I kept on dozing off.

Nice to see someone finally managed to get the film as intended on a dvd release.

Where did you guys get your copies? The only one on Amazon is asking like $200 (pfft).

reply

This was a self release from the Director. I got mine from http://www.diabolikdvd.com/

But they only got one shipment and it sold out. The Director told the guys at diabolik dvd that he's working on a wide DVD/Blu-ray release for later in the year. Supposedly with Synapse Films.
