No this is another movie. The scene you discribe reminds me of the opening scene from "Critters 2".
It also could have been the film "forbidden world" aka "Mutant" from Roger Corman.
The movie "Creature" is more like a zombie movie, filmet in blue light ... and there is no orangey rocky set in it.
Sounds like a scene from "Forbidden Planet", did he have a little robot with him as well?
