The final battle at the would be President's mansion is so cartoonish. Soldiers being mown down by Arnie , basically running right into the line of fire upping the body count. None of them seem able to shoot straight. Of course we must not forget the bodies flying in the air after every explosion. This sort of action scene would be repeated in action movies throughout the 1980s and 1990s until it was beyond parody. The success of The Expendables series is a tribute to this sort of action movie.
This was probably the wildest and most hysterical shooting sequence in an action movie at the time. That sequence, like the entire movie, is so over-the-top and brainless but ridiculously entertaining you wouldn’t have it any other way. Suspension of disbelief heavily required.
P.S. (update) icky superheroes who conquer cinema today... yet have been around for DECADES in the world of fiction... and have been given great human stories that ultimately make their “magic tricks” count> the myriad of those old school badass, albeit cheesy AF and one-note action heroes the boomer xoomers (particularly the reich wing kind, of course) revere and will always pit against the supposedly kids stuff of today cuz the old timers are reputedly mature, tougher, kewler and never get offended. Ain’t that right, Stardude and all the old men yell at cloud reactionaries up this in this klanservative safe space? ;) Yo! Let’s watch Rambozo the clown pull off another ‘Murican massacre! So dumb, un-pc and stuff it makes all the straight white conservative bros who have constant meltdowns over the modern world not abiding to their status quo drop to their hardcore knees! XD
Oh, and praise far deadlier, far more exciting and yet much more grounded (not one-dimensional like those 80’s meatheads) modern action legends like John Wick and Rama from The Raid series! Keep crying about yer good ol’ days, chuds.
"Suspension of disbelief heavily required."
You got that right. Last time i watched the movie it was the first time since about 1990 , since then Doom and Quake had been released on the PC . He's got the 'god mode' invulnerability cheat on I thought.
Most people don't go watching films for realism, but for challenging the realism, todays action movies are showing less overcoming of mundane reality, unless we watch superhero films, and that's where is the gap, why doing films like Commando when you can go all the way and make characters do all kinds of magical things. There is less middle ground, where the film is grounded and yet the hero does realistically impossible feats, which is far more relatable than a superhero character with magical tricks.
