This is a no-brainer, I'm sure, but I haven't seen it in years and I guess I never just paid attention. Did Mister just totally have a change of heart and send Nettie back to reunite with Celie? I dunno if I just missed that scene with him and the papers or what, but...yeah.
I think so. It's about the only good thing he did in the whole movie. Perhaps he finally saw how big of an ass he was and did it to atone for his actions.
He received the letter addressed to Celie for Nettie and Celie's children to immigrate back from Africa to the U.S. and paid the fee associated with the request. It was his way of redeeming himself for the years of abuse he heaped on Celie. Remember her admonishment when she left him "Til you do right by me, everything you touch gonna fail!"

My take on that was that Albert was very superstitious and was willing to "do right by" Celie in order to get the curse she'd put on him lifted.
I honestly think he ended up loving her…Call me Crazy….”Crazy”, but after that much time, I believed his affection grew for her…He lusted after S.A., but ended up loving Celie (That my take)….
In the book Mister DID fall in love with Celie and even asked her to marry him again after their seperation (for real, rather than a slave).
And yes, Mister was superstitious...remember at the beginning when Celie wants to cut Albert's daughter's hair off to get the knots out of it? He remarks "nah, it's bad luck to cut a woman's hair".
He took Celie's curse very seriously...and I also believe that when he was complaining to his father about there being "no Shug, no children, no noise, no nothing", I believe what he really wanted to say was that Celie was the one who was completely absent...I do believe he missed her and it wasn't until after she had left that he realised how he had grown to depend on her and had become fond of her.

If I remember correctly (its been a while) but in the book Mister actually had really started to miss celie and wanted her back for a while but Celie had discovered that she was actually gay.
My own take on this is that when Celie "cursed" him, being a superstitious man, he believed the curse. Consequently, in the period of time after that, he either psychologically willed bad things to happen to him (self-fulfillment of his fears of the curse), or just coincidentally had a lot of bad luck, but things went from bad to worse, and he attributed it to the curse. So he had to redeem himself and "do right by her" to rid himself of the curse. That was his original motivation.
However, observing his reaction to the reunion, etc. at the end of the movie, I believe that once he started doing the "right thing" (even though for the wrong reasons), seeing others (especially Celie, whom he actually had some affection for which he had never acknowledged) made happy by his actions gave him an inner joy which he had never felt during all those years of being a miserable, self-centered b@stard. After a while I believe it became a matter of his enjoying goodness for goodness' own sake. In that respect, I believe that by Celie forcing him to change his behavior with her "curse", it actually led to his redemption.
Life's a banquet, and most poor suckers are starving to death!
