shareI'm certain it's lesbianism. Homosexuality was an "illness" back then.
But not tonight
Are you kidding? Like, seriously? We never saw her interact with ANY woman other than Celia, and that wasn't out in the open and obvious. Also they mentioned this only when she was PHYSICALLY sick. Come on.

Whether they find life there or not, I think Jupiter should be considered an enemy planet.
Well this is based on a book and in the book she becomes Celia's "LOVER" and it's much more detailed. so that's why i'm certain it's lesbianism
shareShug and Celie were a lot more intimate in the book than in the movie.
Live your life
Just because that's the ONLY scene for Celie doesn't mean it was the only time for SHUG. Do you see how shy and childlike Celie was with the kissing? Shug was a pro at it so it couldn't be her first time at a rodeo. Steven Spielberg says his only regret is that he didn't explore the lesbianism more in the film.
Ruin is a gift. Ruin is the road to transformation (Eat, Pray, Love)
Sure some type of venereal disease.

It was assumed that they were referring to an STD.
But I think it was just a rumor spread around by angry/jealous folk in the film that Shug had an STD, as she is seen having sex with Albert, Celie, and her husband with none of them catching anything.
"I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus."
"Didn't he discover America?"
"Penfold, shush."
It probably meant she was "loose" and got some sort of STD.
However, it was most likely a rumour started by people of the town and it just stayed on.

I always figured an std. I've read books that took place in this era. never refered to lesbianism as "a nasty woman disease"

I agree ...I've heard Veneral Disease called "nasty womans" disease
shareI've heard STDs called this too, but what confused me was, how did she *recover* from it then?
They had no antibiotics back then. And Shug clearly sleeps with both Albert & Celie.
I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus.
Didn't he discover America?
Penfold, shush.
She had the flu.
