Why did Sofia become a maid after prison?
And didn't go back home?
shareShe was out of jail... but not OUT of jail.
Kind of like an indentured servitude.
It was the only for her to get out. I read the book a long time ago, but I seem to recall that Miss Millie helped get Sophia out of jail because she needed help raising her children.
One good thing that happens in the book is how much those kids love Sophia. Miss Millie has very sweet children that think the world of Sophia, even when they become of age. They are very good to Sophia.
Who gives a crap if those kids were good to her? Great, but she couldn't even see her own family!
shareNever read the book, but the movie makes it come across that they did it because she originally rejected it in a mean way and having her go to jail and get out to be her maid was just to stick it to her. A final F-you in a way. But I could be wrong. It seemed to change towards the end of the movie though. She seemed to be living with Celie.
shareIn the book, the warden is Squeak's uncle. The plan was, Squeak was supposed to go to him and he goes to him and suggest that Sofia should be Miss Millie's maid because Sofia does not really mind jail. Well, the uncle rapes Squeak, but Sofia ends up the maid afterwards.
Ruin is a gift. Ruin is the road to transformation (Eat, Pray, Love)
Sure it said in the book that she was on probation.
