Why does Brewster wear a Cubs jersey?

Why does Brewster wear a Cubs jersey? They never explain why? Did he want to play there? Was he a Cubs fan? Did he play in their minor leagues? I'm a Cubs fan, so it made me wonder why a guy in New Jersey was wearing it?

in the bar scene he tells the girl the cubs were the only team smart enough to hire him and the number was his number. Thats about it...

reply

Yeah I remember he said that at the bar, but it was just strange he wore it and they never fully explained why. Thanks!

With all due respect to your team, I think that it just helps make Brewster a more likable character by having him wear a jersey representing a team that is not exactly a "powerhouse" or a team with multiple World Championships under it's belt. It's the whole "everyone loves an underdog" sort of thing.
If football was Brewster's thing (which is more my thing), they probably would have had him wear a Cardinals or Buccaneers jersesy. (Remember, this was 1985 and you couldn't get much more "underdog-ish" than the Bucs with their losing records year after year and their orange creamsicle uniforms.)

If this movie was made today, you would never put the main character in a Yankee's jersey or a Patriot's jersey or a Cowboy's jersey, etc. Although these teams may have an overwhelming amount of fan support, they are the kind of teams that you either love or are absolutely sick of and despise. It would be much safer to go with something like the Saints or Orioles. Teams that not nearly as many people hate because they aren't typically seen as a threat but have qualities or issues that make them somewhat likable by the general public. The Saints because of the tragedies in New Orleans, the O's because of the whole Ripken legacy that still lingers and the Cubs because of their notoriously long World Series drought. I'm staring to ramble. I hope this made at least a little bit of sense.

Good points! I never thought of it that way. I remember that the clerk in the movie also was a Loyola graduate- another Chicago reference. Maybe, cause I'm from here the references mean more. Yeah, it makes sense he would wear a Cubs jersey or a Saints jersey based on what you said. I remember those "creamsickle" jerseys. also, the helmets with the buc with a knife in his mouth. The good old days. Thanks man!

He actually played in the majors with the Cubs, and that was his jersey during his brief time there. I think he wore it because he wanted so badly to get back to the majors, and he was clinging to something from his time there.
His manager mentions something about it in a discussion with Brewster, something about how he got to pitch in the majors and that is a lot more than most of the guys on the team will be able to say.

it was richard pryor's request because he grew up near the north side of chicago and became a cubs fan

reply

Maybe because he was never a big success in the baseball world, sort of like the Cubs are. It is meant to be a joke.

reply

Pryor himself could have come up with that idea since he's probably a fan. He was born in Peoria, IL. The minor league team he plays for is called "The Bulls"; another Chicago team.

reply

Very true!

it was the one team that he played with in the big leagues.

Whats more odd is that Monty made more in one year with the Tuledo Mud Hens than he did with the Cubs. Early the movies mentions his highest salary was $11,000 with Tuledo, so how long and how much did he make with the Cubs?

I believe that the contract rules in baseball make this scenerio possible. If he was called up from the minors, his contract would have been purchased from Toledo. If he only pitched in one game in the majors, then he would not have met the minimum number of days on an active roster to be paid the major league minimum salary(which in the mid '80s, I believe was around 100k). He also would have been optioned back to Toledo(or traded I suppose) but he would have still been making his minor league salary as when a player gets optioned or traded then contract generally goes with him unless it is re-negotiated.

I may not be 100% on this but I am pretty close.

He was a Cubs fan - he played for one of their minor League farms and had hopes of being called up by the Cubs.

reply

Pryor is from Peoria, Illinois so he was probably a Cubs fan, nad they just made up an excuse for him to where it in the movie.

reply

All that might be true, but if you're paying attention to the movie - His Character is a Cubs fan.

He plays for the Cubs minor League system and his dream is to get called up to their Major League system. - That's why he's wearing a Cubs jersey in the movie
