Ms. Drake being fired.

If Ms. Drake was fired then how can she still write Monty a reciept?? I mean if a firm fires you, I wonder would you still be conisdered a paralegal or if the firm fies you can you still represent the person who your former firm hired you to do so in the first place.

Well, the firing was just to shut Drake up. He probably didn't mean that. Second, maybe the money was for her to become an attorney and represent him in the lawsuit against Warren.

Exactly. Remember this conversation -

Brewster: I'm gonna need an attorney, Ms. Drake. Would $20,000 be enough for a retainer??

Angela: But, I'm just a paralegal!! I don't have a degree yet!!

Brewster: You can get a degree with $20,000!! It's just an advance!!

That was just for dramatic purposes anyway. For the executor to witness first-hand that fraud was likely committed, it wouldn't have mattered if Drake had written the receipt in time. There was already tampering evident. But that's not as exciting as the clock chiming toward midnight.

True. :)

Don't forget:

Angela: (Shouting) You'll need a receipt!

reply

Right. Just another example of how they were trying to make the scene as dramatic as possible--but, as another poster pointed out, Mr. Morehouse already sensed "conspiracy to defraud," so it's likely the time limit was moot...but it made it a whole lot more dramatic with the clock chiming inexorably towards midnight, and Monty goading Angela, HURRY!! and handing the receipt over just as the last chime died away.

I think the reason Brewster wanted to get the receipt in was just to make it absolutely sure he had spent the money so now he could get the full inheritance no matter what happened afterwards.

reply

It was stated earlier in the movie that he needed to spend all the money and have receipts to prove it when he showed up at midnight, so the receipt was necessary

reply

Anyone could write a receipt. She handed it to the executor. He was ultimately the one who needed the receipts.
