Makeover scene is horrible and almost ruins the film

I’m not even some SJW type and that scene is pretty insulting. Change yourself completely to please someone else? What was Hughes thinking? Not to mention she looked better before the makeover so it makes no sense

reply

Ain't a damn thing wrong with sprucing yourself up to look attractive to the opposite sex.

Edit: Or to the same sex if that's your thing.

Here's some advice - don't force the morals of the present on artifacts of the past. You look like a fucking idiot when you do. Were you around when the movie came out? I was and we had no problem with the scene because that's how things were then. You have the mind of a child. Fuck off.

reply

wow triggered much?
That is not how things were back then , and if it was then it was a "bad thing" even at the time.
Changing yourself to fit in with the jocks and the popular girls has NEVER been a cool thing to do.

reply

And yet millions of teens over the years attempted to do just that. Why didn't they reach out to you first?!

reply

cos teens are dumb and easily influenced
Look at millions of them lining up in shops this week to get a whiff of Logan Paul's new energy drink.

reply

The makeover was completely Claire’s idea. Allison didn’t change for anybody.

reply

This is correct.

And okay, the scene would have been ridiculous if it had been about two adult women, but these were immature teenagers, and Allison was depressed and hated herself. She probably thought she was hideous, and might have had no idea under the dandruff she was conventionally attractive, and would be absolutely blown away when someone other than a fellow nerd was nice to her. So while I hated how she looked after the makeover, the fact that someone was nice enough to make the attempt might still change her worldview.

reply

She looked better before. Always thought her makeup looked bad after. Even in ‘85.

A better scene would’ve been Estevez teaching Bender high school wrestling moves in tights.

reply

Literally almost everyone thinks she looked a lot better before the "makeover" idk why people are getting so pissed off in the comments.

reply

And yet your mum's advice to shower every now and then is solid, David.

reply

I didn't like the way she looked after the make over and it didn't suit the personality of the character. I can see the character going home and spitting at the mirror and then cutting themselves up because they would see the new self as a sell out or fake.

I also doubt the Jock would have all of a sudden been into her because of that. He could get a lot better.

reply

In the extended cut there’s a scene where the nerd is teach Bender how to play chess.

reply

What people completely misunderstand about this scene is that the makeover is irrelevant, as is whether she looked better before or after and whether a boy liked it or not. What matters is that two completely unalike girls became friends and bonded over something because the selfish, status-loving one put aside all that to improve something for the benefit of the oddball loner. That is the point of this scene. You don't have to like it now, but that should be the take away. Even listen to the dialogue, it's all there.

reply

Bingo

I was among MANY who thought Allison looked better the way she was

But the scene STILL worked; it was spelled out in the dialogue f'crissakes:

"why are you being so nice to me?"

"because you're letting me?"

Also, as a practical matter, it's irrelevant if Allison looked better before. Andrew wouldn't "see" her as a girl unless she changed her appearance (because he was just seeing her as the outcast before).

It's actually a long-established way to get out of the "friend zone" to look different or demonstrate some new and impressive skill

Excellent point - any external change would suggest other changes as well.

reply

I agree, Allison imo looked hotter before. But I think Andrew found her attractive before as well, her change in appearance just gave him permission to admit it and signaled a likely change in her behaviour, which would allow him - someone whose social standing holds enormous weight - to openly express his feelings for her without it effecting that standing.
