Surprised teachers would make that much in those days
shareI keep reading that he is the principal. Does it say that on his office door?
Asst. Principal, I could see.
If he were the principal, he would have access to the confidential basement files.
And wouldn't have to pay off Carl for busting him.
And if he were the principal, do you really think he would be spending all of his Saturdays at the school? I don't think that's likely.
He was the vice principal it says right on his door. As to teaching, when I was in school in Texas, every principal I knew worked their way up from teacher. They wanted people experienced with teaching and education.
shareI always thought of him as a disciplinarian, or something like that. How many teachers have their pwn offices?
shareIn the discussion with Carl in the basement, he is a teacher. But perhaps he has the extra job of detention for some extra cash. Although teacher's jobs are salaried. I always felt he was an Asst. Principal, but still taught classes.
I wonder what title it says on the door to his office.
how did that come about in the discussion with Carl in the basement?
and lol at teachers having an office! I have to share my locker with another teacher and keep my stuff for my traveling lessons in the teacher's lounge.
Oh God. Fortune vomits on my eiderdown once more.
More than likely an assistant principle.
shareWhere I went to school (Vancouver, BC), Principals and Vice/Assistant Principals started out as teachers. When Carl said that Vernon took a teaching position so he could have summers off, I took it to mean that he started out as a teacher and worked his way up from there to an administration position.
My bet is on him being Vice/Assistant Principal, because they were always more involved with disciplining students. The Principal at my high school had next to nothing to do with the students and was almost just a pure administrator.

they all have to start out as teachers. that is how they climbed the ladder. you can't tell people how to teach unless you have taught, yourself.
so Vernon was a teacher, it doesn't mean he is one now. It now means that he is in a spot of authority.
in my school not even teachers are allowed to stay in the school after hours if an administrator is not there. for safety reasons.

How did it come about in the basement: (working off memory) Dick is complaining about the kids, and said he was teaching for X many years. And each year these kids get more and more......
Carl says, Oh BS Vern, you took a teaching position, because you thought it would be fun. You'd have summer vacations off, and then you found out it was actually work, and that really bummed you out.
So he is a teacher (or was one). But I believe he still is even if he is an Asst. Principal. He's not the Principal. But I'd like a screenshot of his office door.
As for teachers not being allowed in the school after hours, this movie is over 30 years old, and if he is an Asst Prin, with one of his duties disciplining the detention kids, he has to be there.
I find Carl to be one of the more interesting characters. In the montage sequence at the beginning we see that he was a big shot at that school when he went there.
argh! he was a teacher and he is probably an assistant principal or a dean or something now. and yeah, back then that is why most of them took the job. -- despite the fact that you needed 4 years of teaching college and graduate school in order to keep the job now.
and if he is the assistant principal he has more pull than any teacher.

You have a bad temper, deem.

and wouldn't you be a little peeved when someone talks about something they obviously know nothing about and you do?

We used to get along swimmingly, deem. What happened?

If he were the principal, even the detention kids would have more respect for him.
If he were the principal he would never say: "I'm crackin' skulls".
If he were the principal he would never physically threaten Bender when they were alone.

I was in high school before this movie was filmed. And I am speaking from my own distant historic experience. My statements are not with a 2016 mentality.
What I said is an accurate reflection of the time period in question, and has nothing to do with today.
Corporal punishment was not allowed in most public schools by this time (except for a few states.)
My condolences for your parochial school abuse.
My point which seems to have been deflected, is that he is not the principal.
The principal would have access to all of the student files, (confidential or not) and the principal would not be extorted by Carl for fifty dollars.

Intriguing, deem.

I know that I pulled up something a few years ago that verified he was THE principal. I can't dig for it right now. The script, however, identifies him upon entrance as "Richard Vernon, a teacher."
I work at a high school and have supervised many Saturday detentions. A few observations:
1. All schools are a little different, but it would be unusual for a senior administrator, such as a principal, to supervise Saturdays. For schools that have this, they are usually supervised by certified staffers or faculty (teachers). Where I work, I've seen guidance counselors, psychologists and teachers handle it. They are paid in addition to their salaries, so many like to pick those shifts up. The district no longer uses non-certified staff for this.
2. Vernon does have a nice office, which suggests that he is more than a teacher. Most administrators I know have taught at some point in their careers. It's possible that if he's not a principal, assistant principal or disciplinary dean of students, he could be an academic department chairman (in which case he would likely still teach a class or two) or hold some other position in student services, like student activity director.
3. The scene where Carl catches him looking at student files does not ring true to me. Faculty and staff are constantly referring to student records, and there is nothing unusual about someone like Vernon accessing them. Either way, a custodian wouldn't know if he was doing something wrong, let alone confront him in this way. Others have pointed out to me that he may be looking at employee records, but I never took that from the scene (the script only refers to them as "the confidential files").
