Or is the drawing style a little different than traditional Disney films of the peroid? Almost in the style of Don Bluth

shareI think you are right. I liked the character design, but the actual animation left much to be desired--the characters' movements and expressions were unbelievable (too exaggerated and often too slow) and choppy rather than smooth.
shareThis movie was made at a time when a generation of Disney's best had died or left the studio and a new crop of animators were being trained. I don't think they really hit their stride as far as animating the human figure goes until Beauty and the Beast.

That's right - did you know that Tim Burton was one of the bunch being trained working on this film?

I did not (know that about Tim Burton, I mean)! Cool.

No, it was due to the fact that it took 7 years to make and many different people had their hands on it in that time frame. Due to that, there isn't one over all animation 'style' for the whole film so it comes off looking a bit too hodgepodge style wise throughout the film. It was one of the first films to use more modern technology in parts (APT process), which would be cool had the whole film been done this way but said technology came out half way through that 7 year period so it again creates a jarring, disjointed, unsmooth feel to the film. Also, there are many poor edits in the film as the Disney heads made them remove a lot as they felt it was to dark/scary and would alienate moms, dads and kids.
The animators working on the film were all talented and seasoned, the problem was there were just to many of them and it took to long for it to be made.
Also, Disney animation started to go downhill with The Little Mermaid and has just continued. The classic style is where it's at.
