.............yeah the horned king is probably the scariest/coolest villain of all time...i watched it once when i was a little kid and never watched it again because...HE WAS A SKELETON WITH DEVIL HORNS AND RED EYES..he still scares me to this day..but hes tight now..along with skeletor...and hexxus
Omg this movie was scary.. it freaked me out! I watched it as a kid and then I went back and watched it last year... if I had kids I would so NOT let them watch this.
Soulmate found; none need apply. Anticipated Serendipity! ~S.D.
He really was the best! I remember watching this when i was tiny and the whole film just really scared me...I mean, it was a far cry from Sleeping Beauty or Snow White!
I just watched this movie for the first time in years. Some of the scenes still scare me and I'm 18. Now I remember why I hated this movie so much as a kid. To the best of my memory, I only watched it one time when I was young because it scared me so much. I definitely agree with the topic creator that the Horned King is the scariest villain ever.
I saw it for the first time a few years ago. I guess I had to have seen it as a kid to have gotten scared. But I wasn't overly effected by the horned king. I think Id be able to kick his ass.
I just watched this film today. I avoided it my whole life because everyone in my small puritanical town said it was of the devil, that Disney had gone to hell and you would too if you watched The Black Cauldron. So I saw it, and I said out loud, "That's it? That's what all the fuss was about? Are you kidding me???"
I think I would have loved this movie if I saw it back in 1985 as a 7 year old. I remember watching the trailer on TV and drooling at the prospect of a Disney-made fantasy animation film.
The horned king was pretty cool, but- actually, I think Taran could have kicked the horned king's ass if he just tried, even without the magic sword. Near the end of the movie as you recall, when the horned king picked up Taran and Taran tried to kick himself free, the horned king just buckled under the pressure and totally lost balance. I think he was all bark and no bite. Maybe it was different in the book, I don't know, I never read it, because that was also deemed "satanic" by everyone I knew back home.
this may be because I never saw TBC as a child, but I didn't find the Horned King very scary. His eyes and voice just weren't expressive enough, although there was certainly an amount of creepiness about him. I think that Maleficant beats him easily, IMHO.
I never saw Sleeping Beauty as a kid, but I had the read along stry-book with the 45 record. Every time I turned to the page with Maleficent, I recoiled in horror and quickly turned the page which showed her transformed into a dragon which I thought was awesome.
I finally saw Sleeping Beauty a couple of years ago and I thought, "You know, Malefient is kind of sexy in a very twisted, evil, cartoonish way." But yeah, you're totally right, Maleficent would kick the Horned King's ass in a fight too.
Actually, the Horned King was not a skeleton, he was a man who wore a skull as a mask, with stag's antler's attached, presumbably to strike fear in his enemies.
Actually, I would say he was more of a creature with a skeleton-like face. Real skeletons wouldn't have flesh on their hands. Look at that close-up of his hand as he's talking about the Cauldron born.
Eh, I never found her scary myself, she seems kinda tame in comparison. I'm 22 and The Horned King's first scene still creeps me out a bit. IMO The Horned King is in a class of his own as far as Disney villains go.
malifecent never scared me either really. i think the queen in snow white was creepier/scarier if anything.
i havent seen the black cauldron, i never watched it as a child, in fact i never even heard of it. i think it was kinda 'forgotten' in the 90s. i kind of want to watch it now.
After watching the Black Cauldron for the first time in a while I think the reason why the Horned King is so scary isn't just because of his appearance, it's because he has no personality. Some people may view this as a negative, but I think it actually works for him. Because he has no personality, he isn't humanized, which means you can't relate to him. This has the effect of making him come off as more unnatural and unsettling in addition to his frightening appearance, which makes him all the more scary.
Well, i wouldn't say he was the scariest but he certainly is the scariest-looking. i mean, dude's some freaky skeleton guy with horns; it's creppy. And the way he just walks into the room and everyone goes silent, it's like he doesn't even need to say anything and everyone is already scared sh*tless.
I just watched this movie and I agree that he is pretty scary. I think that he is the second scariest Disney villain coming a very close second to Maleficent, IMO.
Well, apart from thematic elements, one reason this might put you in mind of the Bakshi Lord of the Rings is that the inimitable John Hurt did the voice of both The Horned King and Aragorn.
villians are ALWAYS my fav characters in any movie i loved the horned king when i was younger but now i dont think i'd let my daughter watch it hes freakkin' scary sh!t

The Horned King is one of the scariest animated villains ever, I agree, especially when voiced by John Hurt. I find Chernabog and Hexxus a little scarier, but if you ask me, the Horned King is the best character in the film.
I think the Horned King is just about the scariest Disney villain. Chernabog is (IMO) more evil, but the Horned King has always been super scary to me lol.
The Horned King is in no way second to Malifecant! She's second to him - I saw both films around the same time and Malifecant just seemed too cool to scare me. The Horned King was the reason I literally couldn't watch this movie from the ages of 4-7.
The horned king is scarier. because he is a total badass 100% of the time.. 0 compassion and when he talks its always scary and everyone is always scared of him.
I remember when this came out in theatres they showed it on the news because it was so unlike Disney. I was a kid back then and was pretty intimidated by it. To this day, well, for the ones I have seen, this is definatly the best Disney there is. And as far as I can tell the only Disney where there is blood flowing. (The scene with the dragons pignapping Hen Wen, taran is bleeding). And yes, everytime the Horned King opens his mouth youre in for some sweet dialog
