Was this movie written by a child? Dumb and Cheesy.

This felt like an extended version of Nickelodeon's "You Can't Do That On Television".

I've heard good things about this movie, but was so disappointed.

It seems like a parody of an 80s movie, except that it came out at the same time as any movies it would be spoofing.

The mom can't cook! Ha! Get it?
The Dad gets the slang wrong. Ha! Get it?
The brother's an evil genius....and there's a foreign exchange student and wacky neighbors! The high school students look thirty years old.

The comedy is just so broad here. It makes Larry the Cable Guy's act seem sophisticated.

...or maybe I was just in a bad mood when I watched it....

It was a parody of an 80s movie... and so what if it came out at the same time as the movies it was parodying. You can do that.

If you don't have comedy points like the mother not being able to cook or the dad not knowing the slang what do you have? Whatever they are, could we not go "[comedy point]! Ha! Get it?" about those as well? Give me an example of a comedy you prefer and I'll see if I can do it.

Yes the comedy's broad, personally I prefer that. I like the fact that the humour is general, that the script has many targets not just one or two. I like the fact that there are lots of side-plots like the East Asian car-racing brothers. I think this makes the film funnier and more enjoyable overall.

And yes it was written by a kid, sort of. Savage Steve started writing down the material for the story when he was a teenager who'd been dumped by his girlfriend like Lane was. He tried to kill himself in ludicrously unsuccessful ways like Lane did. A paperboy really sat over the road and kept demanding his $2. Steve didn't write a script or think in terms of a film at that point, but the basic material was from when he was still a kid. Kind of more authentic than most of these 'high school' movies which are written by people even older than the actors.

"Was this movie written by a child?" Actually, yes it was. Much of the subject matter comes from Savage Steve Holland's adolescent journal. How much of your childhood writing material was turned into cult-classic movies that grossed 10 million dollars?

reply

It was written for the lowest common idiots just like You Can't Do That on Television.

I remember South Park obliterated this dopey movie on the Aspen episode.

No judgment, but you have no soul.
