Something Often Lost on Modern Viewers, Not EVERYTHING Had Changed in 30 Years...
Something I never hear mentioned anymore about this movie -- whereas 1985 critic's reviews did notice this -- is that part of the whole point of this was showing that in spite of the 30 year gap between 1955 and 1985, not EVERYTHING had changed. And just when Marty in 1955 feels very much in his element because of this he opens his mouth and says something he shouldn't have.
Examples:
(1.) He's used to family watching a rolled-over TV-set during dinner, but then he mentions having 3 TV sets and Kennedy St ("Who the h*ll is that?").
(2.) His plaid collared shirt with rolled-up sleeve cuffs fits in 1955 just as well as 1985 except the jacket over it is exclusive to '85 ("Why are you wearing a life preserver?").
(3.) He comfortably sits at the soda fountain but then asks for a "Pepsi Free" ("Just gimme somethin' without sugar, alright?").
(4.) He's familiar with the "parking" ritual.
(5.) He's so comfortable playing traditional rock & roll he forgets he shouldn't slide into heavy-metal-madness.
It's a midas touch to the whole movie and adds to the whole sense of Marty's 'woops that hasn't happened yet.'
