Was the main character supposed to be an actual Ninja?

I have not seen this movie yet. However, for those that have actually seen this movie, can you confirm whether or not he (the main character) was truly supposed to be a Ninja in this film? (not in real life of course, but I am talking about the character).

I have read different descriptions of this movie on couple of websites, and some say he was just a martial arts expert and some say he was a Ninja. Was the character actually supposed to be a Ninja?

Yes, he's even referred to as "American Ninja" in the first two films, and I love that.

Ortega says, "Who is he? Is he one of us?"
And the Black Star Ninja responds with, "The American Ninja".

And even more classic, in the second film, Leo, "The Lion", turns on the arena lights, revealing the American Ninja, and says something like, "American Ninja, I presume. How very nice to meet you."

Definitely check out the first two films if you can. Michael Dudikoff and Steve James are awesome together.

NinjaJoe, thanks so much for clearing this up for me. Another thing that had confused me was that the movie was originally titled "American Warrior" and that added to my confusion that he might not had been a Ninja. But I see from your message what he was a Ninja after all. Thanks again.
