anyone noticed this gag ? :-)

in american ninja ortega says:

Ortega: This is Shinyuki. I found him in the jungle when I bought the estate, dressed in the uniform of a Japanese soldier, unaware for many years that the war was over. He never says a word.

the character shinyuki is played by John Fujioka.

4 years ago, in the bud spender & terrence hill movie: "A Friend Is a Treasure" John Fujioka also acts as an japanese soldier that lives in the jungle and doesn't know war is over.

i don't know if this reference is consciously, but it's funny regardless.

Nothing says quality like ripping of Hill-Spencer movies.

"Nothing says quality like ripping of Hill-Spencer movies."

Is it a rip-off? Seems more like an in-joke.

reply

Agreed.

reply

I agree as well...I forgot what we were talking about.

He also played a Japanese soldier stuck on an island in the movie "The Last Flight of Noah's Ark".

reply

Awesome.

Nice catch. Somebody should add that to the trivia section. I love the way that Ortega stops to explain his gardener's backstory to the Columbians.

"There's an even more interesting story behind how I met my butler... but he won't be returning to play a small but vital role in this picture, so it's not important."

reply

Haha! You're right, when analyzed, it's clunky writing , but it's still a great scene.

To any BluRay/DVD distribution company: please release No Retreat No Surrender sequels on BluRay!

The back story was given because they were considering doing a prequel to this movie when the ninja was found in the jungle before the events of this film

He played a similar role in the Six Million Dollar Man as well. In a subsequent episode, he even raises a boy orphaned in the jungle after his diplomat parents are killed (same backstory as Joe.)
