Episode 'Need to Know' - what could drive people crazy?

In the episode "Need to Know", I was wondering what kind of message could make everyone go crazy? Why would everyone immediately "believe" that the message was not some lie?

Even if there would be messages that would make people immediately go crazy, would these messages not be very different between people?

Or should this be seen as some magic spell rather than some piece of information that should not be known?

Intriguingly enough, in the original story, the question that drove everyone mad at hearing the answer was not "Do you know what the meaning of life is?" but "Do you know what God is?
Makes a bit more sense, doesn't it?
