A Little Peace + Quiet - Different ending now?

I had this episode on video as a kid and I watched it on a regular basis.

Now, twenty years later, I rewatched it for the first time and I remembered the ending a little differently.

The version I just saw ends with zooming in on a missile and the protagonist walking out of the frame. (I never got the Dr. Strangelove reference back then.)

But I could have sworn it ended with her approching a missile that's just a couple of feet above the ground and touching it.

Am I completely off here, or did they maybe recut/shorten some of the episodes?

Does anybody know?

reply

No that was never the original ending. This episode always ended on the zoom up to the missile in the sky. Perhaps you have confused another show with this one.

PS I agree i never got the Dr Strangelove reference when i was younger either .

damn! "memory" is a weird thing. i will no longer trust my brain from now on.

reply

LOL. My brain is not so trust worthy either but this particular episode always made a big impression on me as a kid, and i have seen every version there is - VHS, TV and DVD and they all have the same ending

This is very strange. I just viewed this episode for the first time since the night it was first shown. My memory of the final scene was exactly the same as described by Albert_Siebener: the missile was at telephone wire height a fraction of a second from hitting the street. I was quite surprised when I saw the missile (a few nights ago) much higher in the sky.

The fact that it was a complete ICBM--still firing!--was dramatic but of course only the destructive payload would have been heading toward that hapless town. And I believe that it would normally have exploded several thousand feet above ground.

I feel a bit in the TZ myself knowing that the op of this post had that same memory (that no one else has) of that final scene tableau.

I remember this episode from my childhood and distinctly remember it ending with the zoom-in on the high up missile.

I'm so sure because no episode of any series of Twilight Zone has stuck with me more than this ending. It's so eerie that I've had dreams about it in my teens and still remember it vividly in my 20's.

You both are not alone. When they showed it on Chiller, they showed the missile very close. Right above the buildings. I believe she passed it and didn't look at it. Like she was in shock from the news.

This is even more strange.I just saw this Episode after 20+ years and I could swear its ended the same way you and Albert described it!

DonĀ“t just get drunk - Get ugly!

reply

That would've been a little bit better ending, in my opinion.

I thought the real one was a little abrupt.

My memory of it is the same as Albert_Siebener.

Maybe it's a country thing. I'm in England and I remember that the missile was only a few feet above the ground.

Hudson: Hey Vasquez you ever been mistaken for a man?
Vasquez: No. Have you?

I also remember some show (maybe another Twilight Zone?) where there's a huge missile vertically aimed downward, pointing right at the ground and it stops in mid-air.

or maybe not lol http://www.WorldofBong.com

It's definitely a creepy episode though, she found the power to stop death from happening to her and everyone else. Yet she would be alone in a world of silence, if she unfreezed everything she would die. Such a creepy and frightening situation to be in.
