I never watched this when it ran in the 1980s forward. I was single and busy and I wasn't a TV person. I always like Robert Urich and I am happy to own the DVD set. He and Barbara Stock, a fabulous woman are perfect for each other. More interesting than Hunter, another cop show from that era, although Stephanie Kramer gives Stock a run for the money. I am going to enjoy all the DVD sets of this show. To be honest, I was looking for shows that Richard Jaeckel had appeared in.

Spenser is my favorite detective show of all time. Can't you tell? Hawk, IMHO, was and still the coolest character ever on TV. Avery Brooks nailed that role.

If ever get a chance, check out some Spenser novels. It's an easy read and the dialogue is excellent.

Thanks for that, Cind5. When I was much younger I devoured all the Chandler/Hammett/and Ross MacDonald novels.

Robert Parker's dialogue was head and shoulders above anybody else I've ever read. If you like the Spenser novels, you gotta check out the Cole & Hitch novels, the Jesse Stone novels and the Sunny Randall novels. All are excellent reads.

It's an excellent series, with Urich & Brooks really bringing the characters to life. It features smart, literate scripts, and it benefits from actually being shot in Boston. I thoroughly enjoyed it when it was originally aired, and it still holds up wonderfully for me today.
