and I can't belive how cheesy this show really was looking back now! I was a huge fan of this show when it was on. I never missed a Friday night.

No it's not cheesy. It's very cute and charming. Think about it. What show is like this now ? Shows today have lost their innocence. A kid who would be Jamie's age in the show would know a million swear words, would know about sex, would be very disrespectful, would have a cell phone, etc.
The coolness that kids want right now is to be "adult". In the 80's, kids still enjoyed being kids. I know I did. It was a magical time to be a kid in the 80's.
This show has such a lovely lovely innocence. I think it's well written. The jokes are very funny. I really liked the episode where Vicki baby sits Jamie. She does an answering machine message on the phone that is hilarious because it does sound like one LOL
I too have been re-watching the episodes (on DVD). When Vicky ate the liquid that Jamie gave her and she talks in that weird, messed up voice, that was so startling to me because it literally took me back across the years to 1985. It was even scary how I felt like I really was there again. I time-traveled. I was there again, watching this show as a kid in my Chicago home.
This show doesn't appeal to kids today, or even 1990's kids. This show is for kids of the 80's.
You just have to be from that time to love this show. It takes you back to that time and that place where you were watching small wonder.
