Neighbours star Eve Morey on Sonya's future

Some great quotes about Dee in here too! Just hearing her say this stuff in reality is really trippy for me!!

Interesting

I'm Team Sonya. I'm already fed up of the Dee story and it's unnecessary

reply

I'm glad someone agrees. I really hope she just turns out to be a lookalike otherwise I really don't see the point.

I'm writing this signature in bold so people know it's a signature

reply

I am afraid they're going to stuff this up. Sort of like Andrew Lloyd Webber with "Love never dies", the sequel to "The Phantom of the Opera" (the Phantom materializes on Coney Island after he escapes Paris and operates a theme park, luring back Christine.) Last week had some really cringy moments in the writing, and that's not the first time lately. If this story happened with the writers from 2003, or "Neighbours vs. Zombies", I wouldn't be posting this. I just hope they don't spoil it, because the allure of the idea of what happened to Dee is for me probably the coolest most mysterious thing about "Neighbours". Now what happened to Glen Donnelly??? :-)

reply

I think you're probably joking about Glen LOL. But, in some ways, it might okay

He was abit forgettable but it could be interesting. Abit of a connection and storyline for Paul

reply

I actually brought Glen up a while back and he apparently sort of just disappeared. I think it'd be interesting to see him again and know what he's up to.

reply

Was there any bad blood between him and Paul? If there was, that could be an interesting storyline. He comes in as a real threat to Paul... And why would he be resurfacing after all those years? I actually hope this does happen now!!

reply

It's a very vague memory, but I do remember Paul resenting him in the "new person in my dad's life" way, which makes sense but it really could be! I think it'd be great. He was a pretty memorable character - having a romantic relationship with Lucy was part of the reason he was memorable. Nothing happened beyond some kissing of course, but even that was pretty daring!

reply

Omg I remember that now. I'd totally forgotten. Howww did that happen? I'm a bit hazy on certain eras of "Neighbours". 1996 is definitely one of those eras!! (I was watching a clip of Cody's death the other night and I was like, "Who are all these people? And that's the guy from SAW!").

reply

I remember storylines like this pretty well - I think Angus and Elly will probably be one too. Glenn wasn't raised with Jim's other kids, an illegitmate son, so it was believable that there could be an attraction there. I remember her arranging for them to be alone - she was a real "I do what I want" type then - still is, in the corporate sense, really, but they couldn't go through with more than kissing.

Which guy from SAW was in the show? I really only know one cast member and she's not Australian ;)

reply

Thanks for that. This is all kind of ringing a bell for me now too. Gosh, Jim must have hit the roof. He could be a scary guy. A trait I think he's passed onto Paul too!

The guy from SAW was Leigh Whannell (sp?) who also co-wrote the movie (I think?). But I looked and apparently he only played a guest role when Cody got shot. Those are some intense clips too! Someone was actually shot and killed on Ramsay Street. This is not often mentioned...

reply

That's really the sum total of my memories (and a bit from Wikipedia). Oh Jim could be - I totally get why Alan plays the kinds of roles he does nowadays, he's very intimidating when he wants to be. I definitely think he's passed that onto Paul and I noticed the other night that Stefan still looks a lot like Alan.

Ah, okay! I checked him out. That is not, but it's interesting to know.

reply

Well, I remember reading somewhere that Alan was connected to the Tywin Lannister role in "Game of Thrones" (in some way). Charles Dance played that part on the show. And wow, I think that really would have worked! I love that show and to have Alan in there, the "Neighbours" fan in me, would have been amazing, plus it'd be interesting to see the reactions from people who urged me to watch it in the first place, and said "Neighbours is crap" haha.

reply

I haven't watched "Game Of Thrones" but from what I've heard, he'd have been pretty good. I'd say they went older. But yes, it really would have. I remember his characters on Ugly Betty and The OC (I always get confused because his wife on there was Julie), but yes, it would have been a lot of fun.

reply

Yeah. They've been bringing back Paul's children for years. Amy was one of those kids I used to wonder about and then it actually happened.

So when they run out of kids, they could look at Glen Donnelly again, but I think it'll be like Brad and Lauren. They'll recast him.

reply

Oh that's cool re: Amy.

I'm pretty sure they would need to - I googled Richard Huggett (oh my god, the E Street memories as well! I think a part of the reason I remember Glenn is that he was such a creep on E Street then a decent guy on Neighbours and did both really well) and he apparently retired from acting after leaving Neighbours or soon after.

reply

Yes. I'd heard that as well. I just looked at his IMDB though. He's actually had some recent credits, so now I really wonder...

I remember Mum watching 'E Street' when I was a kid and being scared by some of the episodes haha. I ALWAYS remember them finding this bum too and giving him a big makeover and then for some reason they threw him out on the street again. I remember when that show finished!

reply

Oh interesting! I'd like to see him play the part if possible, he was a really good actor.

There were some scary episodes! Especially the weird serial killer guy. I really mostly remember people like Simon Baker and a few others who went onto more.

It was really weird in some ways. Sort of had a few paranormal elements that did have an explanation but left it up in the air a bit, too.

reply

Oh, I had no idea Simon Baker was on 'E Street'. Where I knew him from originally was 'Heartbreak High'. Great, awesome series. Kathy Carpenter on "Neighbours" was Hilary on that, the mother. That's where I recognized her from. Really, really cool show. Ada Nicodemou from "Home and away" was on there too, and more people who went onto "Neighbours" like Scott Major. The woman who played Danielle was actually cast as the original Steph Scully, and if you look *really* carefully you can *just* make her out driving the car when the Scully's pull up for their first episode. After hearing that, I've ALWAYS wondered what she would have done with it!! She was really cool as Danielle!!

reply

He was! And his wife too, Rebecca Rigg, who he's still with and with show business that's a long time. I have heard of that show. I like Tina Bursill a lot - think she's ideal casting as Lauren's mum, too. I love Ada. Oh interesting! I like Carla well enough as Steph but I always wonder what could've been - even back to what if Darius Perkins had stayed as Scott, you know? Would Scott and Charlene have been as iconic, or more "just another soap couple" than they were?

I mostly remember Tina Bursill from the Alvin Purple movies (of all things), A Country Practice, All Saints, Hey Dad, Home & Away and some TV movies. I may have seen her on stage at some point but I'm not sure.

reply

Well, Darius said last year when they were promoting the 30th anniversary, "I could have changed history". I actually PREFER that Scott. I know Jason's iconic and all, and I do like his take on it for what it is, but absolutely it's Darius. If he did keep going, they would never have cast Kylie because it would have been like chalk and cheese. Or they would have cast a brunette or something.

Actually it's interesting to wonder where the characters would be 30 years later, if the show got cancelled in 1985 haha. The season finale of 1985 was the night I was born haha.

reply

He could have, easily. I never even watched Jason and Kylie but it was near to impossible not to know about them! That's another interesting what if, because I can imagine a lot of TV characters in other shows might have ended up played by Neighbours actors. Or maybe Kip and Rebekah might have returned to Home & Away, even.

reply

Which raises the question for me, would "Home & Away" have existed? I always thought that was Channel 7 coming back with their own soap after what happened with "Neighbours". The first year of "Neighbours" was shown on Channel 7 and they axed it.

reply

I actually doubt it would. Which makes me wonder if another show would've taken its place. Maybe one of Seven's other shows would've lasted longer or done better. Or maybe they would've made another soap on Ten and it didn't last either.

reply

Or maybe soaps would have gone out altogether because they hadn't worked? We'll never know. We probably would have had more cop or hospital shows like "Blue Heelers" and "All Saints" (Remember Tom Croydon from "Blue Heelers"? What a legend. He DID actually do "Neighbours" a couple years ago but I'd bring him back in a more ongoing role. This totally should happen. I'd love to see him antagonize Paul!! Actually I'd love to see a lot of actors of this guy's calibre antagonize Paul.) And before "Neighbours" of course was "Prisoner" (Judith McGrath, another great one, and again actually did the show, but would love to see her in a more permanent role.)

It's kinda fun to speculate what MIGHT have happened to the characters if "Neighbours" HADN'T moved to Channel 10.

reply

That could have happened too. I believe that the popularity overseas is part of what keeps them going now, too. But no, we won't. Oh I liked both those shows. I'd love to see either of them on the show and yes to John Wood confronting Paul. Or another actor along those lines, yes.

It really is.

I feel like there would've been soap like shows - things like A Country Practice and E Street being a couple of nights, maybe more emphasis on personal lives, etc in the dramas that did succeed. Sort of like how there's not many real US night time soaps any more (like Dynasty or original Dallas) but there are a lot of soap like dramas.

reply

I really like the idea of Glen now. A different sort of story for Paul and they could bring Lucy back for alittle bit. I believe Glen actually dated Gabby for awhile so he has a little connection to the Willis family aswell

As much as I'd like Richard back in the role (he was actually pretty good), I'd take a recast

reply

I think it would really be interesting and yes, they could do both. He did date Gaby - apparently he broke up with her when he was in an accident that paralysed him. I remember Gaby too, I liked her a lot.

I would take a recast too. Either way, I think he'd be a really interesting character to see again.

reply

After Dee, I wouldn't be surprised by just about anything (except Jim, Scott and Charlene of course. If Scott and Charlene came back, I'm sure Mike and Jane would get on board. Maybe for the 40th anniversary lol.) I'm trying to find out whether apparent rumours about Izzy returning and Jason Herbison leaving as producer are actually true.

reply

I don't think there's much that would surprise me on a soap. I could see that. Oh Mike would be fun - I love Guy. Izzy is Nat Bassingthwaite's character, KK's ex, right?

reply

That's right. Very brassy loud emotional character. It's hard to find a good clip of her these days. But there used to be a great one with her rowing with Karl on the street in front of everyone. It used to make me howl with laughter. I didn't appreciate her enough at the time! There's NO ONE like that now haha, but I reckon Paige could go there! Guy and Annie Jones who played Jane actually did a music video together recently as well!!

reply

And that's exactly what I'm worried about. With Harold it was a bit different

1) He stayed long term and they brought Madge back too
2) His disappearance was a lot more explainable. I never understood how they never found Dee's body... She somehow left the car so if she drowned or escaped they should have either found a body or a well or alive Dee on the sandbanks
3) A repeat of an amnesia storyline would be boring
4) It's just been too long since she disappeared for it to be believable for her to suddenly turn up.

Plus these days the writing is awful more often than not. I'm curious as to what they can come up with but I'm concerned it could be an absolute shocker with how inconsistent the writing is these days.

I'm writing this signature in bold so people know it's a signature

reply

I don't know. I'm a bit confused about Harold's "death" as well lol. I was watching that on the box set the other night. They had search and rescue out the whole day and night. How come they never found him floating around somewhere?

reply

It sounds great. I really feel like Sonya is going to have an interesting story out of this, as well, which is all to the good. I'm not even sure how I want it to turn out but I'm still on the side of Toadie staying with Sonya and Nell overall. They've been through so much already, you know? But then so has Dee most likely, so it's a bit difficult to just say he should stay with his family.

Still, tentative Team Sonya right now.

reply

I'm firmly team Sonya at the moment, especially as she is pregnant, which Toadie agreed to. It would suck for Toadie to ditch her, even though I get the dilemma he is in.

🐨Have you ever?...Ever felt like this?🐷

reply

It would suck, but if written right, I could just see it going either way. But I still feel it would suck for him to ditch her.

reply

I would be Very surprised if he did. Ryan Moloney's always said, whenever this has come up, that he would pick Sonya and that sounds about right. It's an interesting one. His obligation is to Sonya, but his heart is with Dee. I would imagine he would stick with Sonya, if only for selfish reasons as well. Simply being that's his life now and his reality and they have Nell. Also, we don't know what his marriage to Dee would have been like otherwise.

With that said, oh gosh. I actually really like Sonya, despite the annoyingness. They've really had to work at their relationship too and they seem just great together. But I like Dee more. Go back and watch the old episodes if you can. Madeleine West was just iconic and incredibly beautiful in that role. Just the long flowing hair makes me go, "He belongs with Dee!" Ahhhh!

I'm obsessed with this whole premise in general.

reply

I don't think he would. I think - and actually hope - he'll be torn for a short time, because he clearly loved Dee and there's got to be at least a brief time of "which one"? or it really wouldn't be worth bringing her back for any reason.

I like Sonya too! To be honest her annoyingness reminds me a bit of my own sometimes pushy ways, which is part of why I like her, I can relate a bit. But they are wonderful.

I do think Madeleine is absolutely gorgeous though! Did you watch her (and Craig McLachlan) on The Wrong Girl?

reply

To me, Madeleine West as Dee in the wedding dress and the laurel wreath, and the car going over the cliff on her wedding day, is part of modern Australian iconography. There must be so many people my age at least who recognize that. And it was voted as well as the top second greatest moment in "Neighbours" history - behind Scott and Charlene's wedding, which was one of the reasons they did the story (as apparently the interest in the storyline spoke volumes!). But yeah, it does make me think of "Love never dies" with "Phantom". How do you follow up a crumbling chandelier and a lake filled with candles and Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman singing that incredible music? How do you follow up Dee's wedding day destruction? Well, we're going to find out. It'll either be really solid and awesome like Madge's ghost for the 30th, or in the space of one month it's going to be like spoiling Christmas? Either way, I can't wait!!! I can't believe it's actually going to start on Friday!!!

reply

I have seen that - it must have been on a clip show at some point, I swear, because I can see it in my mind's eye, and a panicked Toadie as well.

I have to agree on Scott and Charlene's wedding outshining it just because of how iconic they were, too.

It is going to be incredibly hard to live up to the expectations, isn't it? I mean, yeah, LND... is not great.

I know! So close and yet so far right now!

reply

Have you seen the promo clip for this week's season finale?

The shot of Toadie's reaction after he sees the pic...HAS DEFINITELY LIVED UP TO MY EXPECTATIONS & THEN SOME! So let's see....*waits anxiously*

reply

I have! Or at least one! I might be almost as excited for Piper and Tyler's stuff, I will admit. And the wedding looks great, too.

But yes! And Stoney's gentle "they never found the body, did they?" So excited!!!!

reply

Just the way he was sitting there...goosebumps. I sound like a teenager at a Justin Bieber concert just trying to articulate it!!!!

Terese is going to hit the roof!!

reply

I know what you mean. It's really hard to describe, but he's acting even though he's not talking. Like he's showing the emotions. Ryan is so good as an actor.

Oh she is! Unless she's actually able to accept it now. Weirder things have happened, and it may seem less... difficult if she's at least tried things with Angus for Therese?

reply

Or maybe it'll be Brad who hits the roof. Hmmmm. We'll see...

When you give Ryan some dramatic storylines, he's scary how good he is. He's going to be awesome here, for sure!!

reply

I think it'll be Therese after tonight. Though I'm not sure it wasn't more about the Tim footage.

I can see that. He really is.

reply

Toadie in the trailer when he opens the door and (presumably) sees Dee, JUST *OMFG*

reply

I KNOW! I was all OMG too! Seriously! This is epic! At least so far. Let's hope it keeps up the epicness.

reply

The episode was a bit subdued for me. But I was always nervously anticipating... It had some cringey moments, with Brad dancing around in the Waterhole (where the reception was being held for some reason?? I don't know.) Loved everything between Lou & Kathy. Just wow!! If Lou never comes back now, this is the perfect send off, with the last moment being both of them with Lauren at the end. That was really, really cool (although Lou's going to miss all the fun with Toadie, that's for sure!! I wish we could hear about all these people's reactions, like Libby Billy Lance Anne Harold Lou, ALL these people who actually knew Toadie and/or Dee. Imagine getting that email! "Hey, Flick. You're never going to believe this, but Dee just came back from the dead.")

And then Toadie gets the txt message. Oh gosh... But it was the promo that pushed me over the edge. Again, WHOA! This is a good thing though. They're saving it for the big moment next year and giving us a little understated teaser now, with the story just beginning. I personally think they're really back on form with this storyline, and I'm a harsh critic of this show at the best of times!

reply

Exactly, and that is his life and he has responsibilities. I get there will be a 'torn' story line. Sonya & Toadie have been through so much together.

I like Sonya too. She is irritating, but a good person. I am indifferent to Dee. She was in it when I used to watch it, but her and Toadie being an item was after my time. I don't have a lot of memories of her.

It's gonna be fun, annoying, and heart-wrenching. I hope 2017 keeps the steam going with more fab stories.

🐨Have you ever?...Ever felt like this?🐷

reply

I always thought, naturally he would stick with Sonya. That's just always the conclusion I thought he would have made, because that's just reality basically. But then especially with Mark and Sonya in the promo, I *really don't know*. Who really knows??? How mental would it be if Toadie actually left the show after driving away with Dee?? (Although let's hope they keep their eyes on the road this time!!!). It's trippy.

It's the CONTINUITY for me that makes me LOVE this storyline. "Neighbours" is just one of those shows after 30 years that CAN DO THAT. And I just love continuity with anything like this in general. It's like how "Beauty and the Beast" with Disney goes back to "Snow White". And if you watched the show every day back in 2003, this is all happening in real time. Turn on something like a new cop show now that started last year and look at a character talking about his dead wife from 14 years ago. But we actually saw all that at the time! MAANNN, I love how "Neighbours" can do that!

reply

I think so too. I hope Mark & Sonya don't get together - I love their platonic relationship, like Ben & Piper. I'd hate for Sonya or Toadie to leave. That would be an iconic scene, though, even if he just left for a wee trip away.

I get the appreciation of continuity, plus it's a big thank-you to long time viewers & hardcore fans.

🐨Have you ever?...Ever felt like this?🐷

reply

I just hope they don't split Toadie and Sonya up now. They've got two children and been through so much together. The Dee story is just to add unnecesary drama and shock tactics after 14 years

I just hope the story is just to deal with Toadie's guilt and won't rekindle anything between them. Dee probably has a family of her own after this time

reply

Do they have a child other than Nell? I wasn't aware of that. I'm not including any possible surrogacy pregnancy, if that's what you mean, though.

I don't think so. I think it's an interesting idea myself.

reply

I mean Callum. I know he's Sonya's son, but, Toadie is his father in everything but sperm donation LOL. He's raised and loved him as his own - even before Sonya if I remember right

reply

He's the one that turned out to be the compatible donor for Zoe, yes? I haven't seen him on the show. Huh, I had the impression he was her brother, lol.

reply

He's actually ((when he was on the show) even like a mini Toadie LOL

reply

That just makes him sound adorable - I think Toadie is incredibly cute most of the time, so the idea of a mini Toadie just makes me go awwww.

reply

Considering she's there for about a month, I think that's what it is essentially? They're answering the mystery all these years about what happened to her? I just finished watching the box set the other night and seriously it's a real head scratcher. I want to know how she got out of there and how come they never found her! I think after the car submerged, like Toadie, she's gotten out somehow and she's drifted off somewhere. That's the big mystery. And how did no one notice this woman in her wedding dress and not put two and two together?

I got this really cool image the other night, while listening to Pink Floyd "The Division Bell", specifically the song "Marooned". Of Dee just standing there marooned on an island in her wedding dress. I want that on a tshirt. Someone make me one!

reply

I am absolutely dying to find out how it happened. To be honest, that's my favourite part of "character returns from the dead" storylines anyway - it's actually really hard to screw it up unless it's something completely outlandish and I don't think Neighbours would go that far with it.

I do like the idea of her being marooned with some kind of mysterious island guy who kept her prisoner or something - which is, actually, about as outlandish as I think I'd like it to go.

reply

If it hadn't been for the 30th (which almost doesn't count because I was letdown by it in a lot of ways), this would be the first time in *many* a year I'd been *this* excited about a "Neighbours" storyline, excited nervous curious anxious emotional frightened and kind of exhausted, all at once. Actually it feels a lot like waiting to see the last "Harry Potter" movies!!!

reply

This one and one other are the two storylines I'm most excited about for next year. The other is David's coming out/coming to terms with himself and (hopefully) he and Aaron becoming an iconic Neighbours couple themselves. Yes, I hope David is his Betty  Though I'll be happy to see the coming out/coming to terms storyline done well, and I really do hope that if nothing else, it'll be some more drama rather than comedy for Aaron.

reply

Ha! That's exactly what I said. Frank, you have found your Betty. I thought it was disgraceful what David's grandmother said to him. How could you do that right as you're dying? Just so awful. But then I like how complex it is because she comes from the older generation where things were different and who knows what she saw. Is she Japanese? How would she have been affected by the Second World War especially with the nuclear bomb? One thing for sure, she was a very memorable character but I didn't like what she said to him *at all*. Not one bit. And I AM really hoping/looking forward to a David & Aaron union. Just don't trip through the floorboards on the night of the honeymoon or whatever, haha. Poor Aaron...

reply

I really thought that, because Aaron is now Ramsay Street's Frank to me. I really disliked what she said, but her age and what she might have gone through are enough to keep me from disliking her - I actually liked her a lot and am sorry we didn't get more of her. But yes, things really were different in the older generation, as well, but it was still a terrible thing to say. It's only going to make it harder for him, not stop him, after all. I really think they could be an iconic couple themselves, and not only because of their sexuality. I think they work really well and have chemistry. Though I could, sadly, see that too, hee hee.

reply

I have to say it's a great look at generation differences and that's cool. There's usually something redeeming in there, for every bloody Brooke or whoever that comes on and annoys me haha. Although right as I was beginning to *just* tolerate that woman, she nicked off again. Gawdddddddd.

And yes, Aaron & David seem great together. I really hope that works out.

reply

I like that part of it. I can really relate to the differences, even if it's not the same. There is almost always something worthwhile in a storyline. I don't mind Brooke but I don't know if Fifi's a good actress? She gets a bit sugary at times, especially with Xanthe. I think they only had her for a certain amount of time, but at least if things work out she'll be easy to bring back.

I do hope so. Especially after that Q&A Zoe and Matt did and he said he'd like to see Aaron in a long term relationship. I also think David's story is an interesting one - so many gay characters are brought in as gay and relatively comfortable with themselves, Aaron being an example, it's interesting to have one we'll hopefully see find that.

reply

I just remember thinking wow. The ultimate reason to repress your sexuality, because your grandmother warns you that you're going to suffer, on her DEATH BED more or less. That'll stay with him forever no matter what. It was just so, so cruel, but in her mind... Again, fascinating! Coolest thing they've done in a while actually! Now WHO IS THE father?? It can't be that Bradley guy surely. They've built it up too much.

reply

I am kind of wondering if she knew exactly what she was saying. I'm sure she meant to stop him, but considering she was probably fairly doped up on medication as well, I even wonder if she was harsher than she meant to be. But still, it will totally stay with him. I'm hoping Aaron can help him with that, outside of wanting them together as a couple. I even think Jack might help. It really is! I think that and Dee will be the big stories in the early part of the year, and I am sure he will be a regular. I think it can only be Paul, Gary or Brad age wise, if it's one of the current regulars, even though Brad wasn't living there at the time. Paul is also a little older, but that may have been the issue My vote is for Gary, particularly with the discussions about his bad boy past. Unless someone comes back, of course.

reply

I think he'll stay with Sonya. I'll be very, very surprised if he doesn't. I'm wondering though... is it possible that we're going to get a sort of Angus situation here? How they brought back Sarah and then introduced her kid? Could Dee have been pregnant and somehow had a baby? I only wonder because of the difficulty with having more children.

reply

That wouldn't surprise me either. I think it'd be interesting for them both to have kids (one new, one newly discovered) with other people, too. Well, more than they apparently already do in Callum.

reply

Hope Toadie dumps annoying Sonya and her stupid glasses which she only started wearing as a prop to use to be more annoying.

reply
