Maddie doesn't miscarry and it's revealed that it's David's baby (which logically Maddie should have known and told David from the beginning because timewise it could not have been Sam's but the writing was mostly nonsensical by then anyway - from the season 4 premiere to that travesty of a series finale.)

After the baby is born Maddie's not ready for David to actually live with them, so she gets a babysitter; they go back to working on cases; they perform toned down but still entertaining versions of their snarky flirty banter while working on their relationship - with occasional appearances by little David, Jr.

But Glenn Caron seemed limited to writing the David/Maddie chemistry only if their relationship never evolved. As for the writers who came after him...any of us might as well have walked off the street on a whim back then, applied for a screenwriter job without any credentials whatsoever and got it. I guarantee you the results would have been better than the drivel we actually got in the last two seasons.

I'll admit that Season 4 and 5 each had a few decent moments but as a whole - particularly season 5 - they seemed to be produced and written by people who didn't care about character continuity and who just didn't care about the show - period.
