As far as I am concerned, most everyone is correct about the first three seasons being by far the best. I do have to give a LARGE shout out though, to season 4 episode 9, Fetal Attraction. It is a superb bit of cinematic wonder. A very touching episode.

I bought the first three seasons on DVD and even though I loved them in the 80s, the show does not hold up for me. I tried over a dozen episodes and they seem corny and quaint now. Even "Atomic Shakespeare" was disappointing and that one used to be (for me) in the top five of all the seasons combined.

After complete review, I could not agree with you more. I remember liking this series so much, when it was originally aired. I was a young brand-newlywed back in those days, so I suppose the romantic aspects of it appealed to me. At least for the first 3 seasons. Yet, even those get tiresome, the constant bickering gets irritating quickly. And you are correct, much of it was pretty corny.
And as for seasons 4-5, well, a few sparkles, very few. I did like the episode noted above. They were mostly just awful, though.
I could barely make it through season 5. I even had to just skip a couple of episodes that focused on Herbert Viola and Agnes, and I did a good bit of fast forwarding through all the musical production numbers.
Viola just killed the show. Agnes was more than enough of the comic sidekick for the series, she kept the cup brimming full. Adding another character of that type just ruined it. Well, along with the poor story lines between Dave and Maddie the last couple of years. I only watched til the end again because I am persistent, and wanted to fully qualify my re-evaluation.

Adding Herbert Viola was a sign the show was in trouble. It's the Cousin Oliver Syndrome from The Brady Bunch. Giving Agnes a love interest was nothing more than filler for the show and possibly took some of the pressure off Cybill and Bruce and their infamous off-screen squabbles.
The show doesn't hold up for me either except for a handful of early episodes -- The Lady in the Iron Mask, The Dream Sequence Always Rings Twice, Portrait of Maddie.

I started watching the series again, the series where I fell in love with Bruce Willis, and I'm stunned! So far, it's like flat beer. I'll give it more time, but I'm agreeing with the "corny and quaint" summation.
