The writers had difficulty getting the scripts written on time. Someone, perhaps Caron [the creator of the show] noted that the overlapping dialogue made scripts much longer than those for a regular tv show.
In addition, there were many behind-the-scenes conflicts between the two stars and also involving Caron. This friction did not contribute to smooth production.
The show itself mocked these things, and the inability of the people involved to complete episodes in a timely fashion, resulting in numerous reruns and other methods of filling the time slot--e.g., "clip" shows, which collected short scenes from numerous episodes, surrounded by a framing device, such as the episode with Rona Barrett.
In consequence, altho the show ran five seasons, the number of episodes was much lower than was typically the case.

Tell me why someone would ask a question and expect another person to type out a special response for them when the answer could EASILY be found by doing a simple search and looking at Wikipedia.

You have a very valid question... and I am sorry some posters told you to search Wikipedia. First of all, Wikipedia does not fact check, so you need to take their info with a grain of salt. Also, these boards are meant for discussions and dialog. if everyone searched the internet, then why have chats??
I just wanted to add, some seasons had weeks of delay between episodes due to problems on set with the actors. Also, there was a writer's strike in 1988 which affected several TV shows, as writers were banned from writing new episodes.

The departure of showrunner Glen Caron - Caron and series star Cybill Shepherd never got along and things never improved. By the third season one of them had to go and it wasn't going to be Shepherd.
Bruce Willis - Wanted to be a movie star and the success of Die Hard in 1988 made that a possibility. He was uninterested in returning to episodic television and he made that clear to producers.
Cybill Shepherd had children and she wanted to spend the time with them - Shepherd hadn't done episodic television in nearly two decades and she wasn't thrilled with the lengthy amount of time she spent on set, in addition to her dislike of the showrunner Caron. Her public dissatisfaction made the series ratings drop as viewers decided to stay away from the program in droves.
