Miss black sitcoms
227 reminded me the most of the women in my own family. Other black sitcoms in the 80's, 90's and early 2000's were also great.
Mary and Rose are like most black women. Most black women are not weave snatching harpies no matter what Tommy Sotomayor might say. Even Sandra wasn't a cliché or Jezebel stereotype. She was funny and sweet.
I feel like we live in a "neo minstrel" era with shows like Basketball Wives and Real Housewives of Atlanta. It's ironic that the fiction sitcom shows portrayed everyday "black" life better than "reality" tv today does. I feel like in some ways society has regressed (at least in terms of black women) over the past 30 years.
The media image of black women today is worse than a cartoon. That's why people act as if Michelle Obama is just faking and there is a finger snapping, head waving "angry black woman" underneath.
