Just caught this movie on Netflix. I really liked it but felt that some of the references went over my head. Like the black album cover and Nigel not being able to get up during the concert.
Were they trying to make fun of any rock band(s)? Or was it just a general spoof of all rock bands?
As others have stated it is a melting pot. The black album is a reference to the Beatles "White" album. Metallica actually released an album called the "black" album years after the movie as a nod to Spinal Tap. But basically the actors in this movie lived thru the British invasion of the 1960s. And this movie is a loving post-card to all those successful groups and also the one-hit wonders of that generation.
