Kirstie Alley

why wasn't she in this?

reply

Rumors abound, but apparently she wanted a lot more money, not exactly something Harve Bennett was known for. I would've loved to see her take on the role, especially having to deal with Pon Farr.

I liked them both in the role, but Robin Curtis seems to highlight Saavik's Vulcan character more.

Which was a stupid decision. Kirstie had already played the character as half-Vulcan, half-Romulan in Star Trek II. They may have cut the line mentioning this, but her distinct struggle to control her emotions and to act like a full Vulcan was very noticeable in the film. It was silly to do an about-face and pretend like this aspect of her character never existed, especially in a film that is a direct sequel that picks up right where the last one left off.

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?

I'm sure I heard it mentioned. It was odd, though it didn't particularly worry me. I would have liked to see her more in the fourth film where she only got about 3 lines of dialogue and got left on Vulcan for some stupid reason. But I guess they just wanted TOS stars going back in time.

It's a scene deleted from the film, when Spock is loitering around to hear what rating Kirk gives his cadets. Spock mentions Saavik being half-Romulan. You can find the scene on Youtube, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rKw66EU5Fc. I just think the way she was written in Trek II made her infinitely more interesting. I don't hate Robin Curtis in the role, though. I think she did fine as a Vulcan Saavik. It's just that from the start, they never knew what to do with her character after Trek II. So many ideas, including all the talk of her having Spock's child, yet none of it happened. Even Trek VI was going to reveal Saavik as the conspirator, which really would have made for a shocking twist in the mystery. Instead, we got Valeris who was obviously the guilty party from the start. No one would have suspected Saavik. Anyhow, it wouldn't have distracted from Trek IV at all to have Saavik along.

I'm glad that dailynonn asked this question. And I've enjoyed reading the replies. Last weekend I watched Trek II and tonight watched Trek III. Robin Curtis was fine, but I wish that Kristy Alley had been in it. Oh well...
