Better than The Wrath Of Khan

I think we get your taste in movies. I suggest you watch the short film The Adventures of Commander Sonak, Science Officer. It should be right up your alley.

Care to elaborate on what exactly is better in Trek III as opposed to Trek II. Give us something to talk about other than simplistic blanket statements with no depth.

I'll play along by offering up the idea that James Horner's music for the film is better than his Trek II score. It's less action-oriented and more melodic and slow-paced, which really adds weight to the drama. Even as a separate score enjoyed apart from the film itself, it really is a beautiful score.

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?

Agreed. I just have to look at 2,3 & 4 as the "Star Trek Trilogy" which was fantastic.

The OP doesn't really make an argument for it, but I don't think you're going to find too many people who feel III trumps II. I certainly don't. But I do feel that TSFS is criminally underrated. I'm not sure if it's simply because of its juxtaposition to the brilliance that is TWOK or what.

Best/worst. Good/bad. They're all relative. What I'll say instead is that TSFS is my second favorite Star Trek film.

My biggest issues with TSFS is that it basically undid everything that happened in TWOK, and blew up the Enterprise to boot.

"Lovey-dovey. Bonk bonk on the head!"

But it doesn't undo the character's growth as Kirk and Spock grow as characters from Part 2 and this film.

reply

Part 6 is a good coda for the original crew.

I wish they ended Kirk's story with Undiscovered Country rather than bringing him back for Generations.

reply

TSFS might be my favorite in the fact that I really love the Shat's acting. He is showing general concern over the loss of his closest friend. Especially when he gets into the turbolift after doing his log, where he leans up against the wall, lowers his head and wipes his top lip, seeming like he might be on the verge of tears. Even with the mind meld with Sarek stirred up memories that he tried to bury. How many people would give up everything they have to help a friend, either dead or alive. Who didn't get that Chris Matthews tingle up their leg when Spock turned around and said, "Jim, ...your name is Jim.

TWOK I really love also but the inconsistencies were too many to be ignored. Although, by watching the Directors Cut you discover some things that were not in the original, like Scotty crying when he saw his nephew die.

As someone else said, it's all relative.

And the closing line ...AND THE ADVENTURE CONTINUES... let's go save some whales. Gimme a break. If you were going back to the eighties, why not hunt down Khan and kill him before he shows up in the 23rd century and kills your best friend?

reply

The impact of killing Khan (ruler of 1/4 of the world at one point) would have been huge. No telling what they would have returned to. Possibly something far worse.

Agreed. TMP is underrated. A truly cerebral experience, studying the clashes of logic and emotion. My favorite scene is when Spock, laying on the sick bed, grabs Kirk's hand in a brotherly way, and states that "this simple feeling is beyond V-Ger's comprehension."

I'll postscript this with saying the Director's Edition of TPM is highly underrated. It was masterfully cut. The looooong version... can be harder to sit through.

The boring one where nothing happens for two hours.

I like this film, very dramatic and touching it contains some really memorable moments. For me though Wrath of Khan is the most well scripted of any Trek film and that is what sets it apart although I do agree with the point about Search for Spock's score being superior, it really is beautiful.

I never really cared for 'Khan', but I have re-watched 'Spock' and 'Voyage' countless times. Nimoy knew what he was doing - great movies!

And the James Horner soundtrack for III is astoundingly good. Each cue is a masterpiece!

reply

I'm sure Prokofiev and the other various composers, the ones that REALLY wrote the score, would agree.

Love both, but prefer WOK (the script, acting and emotional factor were perfect in that one, not that TSFS was lacking in any of those, just that WOK was a stronger film).
