Possible origin?

Do you think the name "Larry Darell" (Murray's character) found its way into the old Newhart Show of the late 80s/early 90s, as the brothers, "Larry, Darell and Darell"?

You'd have to ask the Newhart people that question.

I've always wondered if George Clooney's horny doctor's name from TV's "ER" was taken from Gene Wilder's character from "Everything You Wanted to Know About Sex (but were afraid to ask)". Dr. Ross fell in love with a sheep in the latter and I wondered if "ER" series creator Michael Crichton was having an inside joke when he came up with Clooney's womanizing doctor.

Yes - just ask Bob.

No, the reason the film uses the name Larry Darrell is because that is the name of the character in the novel, also titled "The Razor's Edge" which was written by W. Somerset Maugham and originally published in 1944. The novel served as the inspiration for the movie. The character of "Larry Darrell" existed long before the Newhart Show, so maybe the characters on that show take their name from the character in the novel. Ya think?!
