You will drop this coin when I snap my fingers

I first saw this movie when I was 18 years old in 1986 and it inspired me in so many ways. I am now starting to read the book at age 47. I have gotten into Yoga these last couple years and starting dabble in meditation. I can not help but think about the scene where Larry says "You will drop this coin when I snap my fingers".
I think it was so cool that Larry made his friend drop the coin. I realize that the character Larry was using some forum of meditation taught to him by the monks in the mountains of India. My question is does anyone know what forum of meditation that was supposed to be? How was Larry able to make another human meditate? Especially that quickly? Is this possible in real life?
Any references from the either film or the book would be appreciated. Also your thoughts idea's or insights are greatly appreciated. Is their a forum of meditation where a person could make another human drop a coin?
What ever state of mind Larry helped his friend achieve was very cool because it relieved his anxiety and physical illness. Which is another reason I am so fascinated by this scene!

That same scene was really well done in the 1946 version as well, just blocked a little differently. How was it in the book?

I am sad to say I have not yet got to the book. It is sitting on my shelf. You are motivating me. I want to read that scene. I also will re-watch the black and white version.

In the 1984 version he actually counts to 10 and Grey drops it on 8. In the book he counts to, I believe, 20 and Grey drops it at 18. Either way, the whole "meditative healing" thing that seems to be going on takes weeks if not a few months in the book but the scene in the movie is fairly close to the first session in the book. The rest of the sessions aren't detailed.
