Has not aged well at all

Watched this on TV last night, probably since the first time it was released, and boy-o-boy what a stinker.
I'm not talking about the non PC stuff that just wouldn't fly these days, I'm talking about the humour, it was just not funny, not even in a zany / slapstick kind of way.
It was embarrassingly bad. It was even worse than anything I imagine Neil Breen making if he ever tried his hand at comedy.
I wasn't a fan of this when I first saw it (TBH I think I only saw bits of it back then) but I don't remember it being THIS bad (in the same category, but probably aged a bit better, are all those Mel Brook's comedies from the same general era that everyone thought were hilarious).
I'm just scratching my head at current comments praising the film.

I won't disagree with the general sentiment here. I certainly enjoyed it more when it was contemporary and I was a teenager. I think in 1984 when this was new, Michael Winslow was the real star of the show, everyone wanted to hear the next goofy sound effect he could make. And we were all gaga over Callahan as well. The more I think about it, the more I understand how it appealed to my demographic at the time, 12-13 year old boys.

"a movie i didn't like from 40 years ago i still don't like today,
who'da thunk it?"

DUDE...IF YOU DIDN'T LIKE IT ORIGINALLY...THEN YOU ARE NOT THE ONE TO JUDGE HOW IT HAS AGED.

Exactly my thought. I also don’t get why people go to a message board about a 40 year old movie just to say they don’t find it funny. Are you that bored in life? Looking for some validation of some kind?

reply

I don’t begrudge critical posts on old movies. It brings the movie back into consciousness, contributes to the site, and gives other people a chance to defend the movie or critique the post which is also fair game. It can be a little annoying when the OP admits long preexisting bias against the movie.

I just watched it and it’s still funny to me. Not gut busting funny as it was when it first came out but still humorous
