Throwing away the weapons.

Just watched this great film again and it occurred to me that Hector throwing the guns away at the end was probably not a good idea. There must have been other survivors (in submarines for example). And who knows how the 'end of the world' would have affected them.

reply

Yeah. Even if enough time had passed that all the zombies had turned to dust, there were probably some survivors around who may have had bad intentions. I'd want to keep the guns around just for insurance.

It's not like there's not a heavy supply of guns in the US.

If you don't have one on you when you need it, the one in a police car three blocks away isn't going to help.

reply

yeah I just watched it again after many years and it was still good, but I thought the same thing when he threw away the guns.

It's supposed to be symbolic of starting a new kind of world, but I'm not denying it was impractical

Start of the anti gun movement?
In 1984?

What do you do with your guns when they get dirty? Clean them? Pffft.

reply

The whole point of Hector throwing away the guns was meant to show that they were starting a new civilization without guns or violence.

reply

Bingo. Seems silly in 'real-world' terms but it makes sense in film language.

reply

Tactically, and perhaps strategically stupid, but even my 13 year old (at the time) firearm enthusiast brain realized it was about civilization starting over and believing that human conflict would never arise again.

...and Mrs. Taylor sure seems to use a lotta ice, whenever he's away

reply

As The Walking Dead has so aptly taught us, the zombies are no big deal. It's the survivors you have to fear.

reply

That was always they point from Romero's Night back in 68.

reply

that moment would not go down well today with the 2A crowd.

reply

Yeah, a very stupid move to dump perfectly functional weapons.
Stay well armed and hope you don't need guns, its much better than praying to God for help.

GOD does NOT care about you but a few firearms will save your ass.
