Metal Slug connection?

I watched this movie for the first time years ago before I was introduced to Metal Slug. I just watched it again yesterday and realized the mechanical design, especially the huge aircraft and the tanks are very Metal Slug-esque. Are the mechanical design of the two done by the same person? Or perhaps they were related somehow?

Well it's the Japanese art direction that has that "look", plus Hayao Miyazaki has a fixation with WWI and WWII, plus you're not the only one to see comparions with Metal Slug:

yeah so i guess actual war and vehicles like airplanes and tanks had nothing to do with their idea to make a war video game

When you look at Japanese video game design in general over the past 30 years, if you pay attention you'll see Miyazaki influences almost everywhere.
