It's to stop people who are under 17 from seeing the film without a parent or guardian accompanying them.

You must have seen the edited version on TV. There is a lot of nudity and implied sex.

The sex scenes, though brief and not quite as graphic as some seen in movies released years or decades after this one, like, say, Basic Instinct, are more than implied. They're pretty silly by today's standards but worth watching just to see former Playboy Playmate Shannon Tweed in her smoking hot, twenty-something prime and glory.

Bare breasts, shots of the exposed female pubic area and the "F " bomb come to mind for starters.

I do not know what it is but every time I come to a movie board everybody always questions "Why is this movie Rated R for?" Like someone said it is due to a lot of the nudity in the movie and all.

Come on what is wrong with people today? What do they expect movies to be rated G, PG, or PG-13 these days? That is why I miss the 80's a lot because there were a lot more Rated R movies than what there is now a days.

All these movie companies just care about is packing the movie houses with teenagers! I loved it like one person said you have to be with an adult to be able to go see a R rated movie.

I love to go see a good movie but I do not want to have to worry about the young teeny boppers running around the theater you know laughing, talking, shouting or any of the most annoying things that the teenagers do today at the movies.

Some kind of growing Troll technique. Like people that ask is certain movies are okay for their kids to watch. I've seen some ask on horror boards.

That is not good that it is some kind of Troll technique. Yes I have seen people do that on certain films on other boards as well for their kids to watch.

If this movie came out in most European countries, it would have been rated an equivilant to PG but you must remember America has deep puritanical roots that it still can't seem to shake, and this is a major cause why exposing children to violence but not nudity is culturally accepted.
