It's been 25 years since this refreshing take on Tarzan. It's a great movie that would be hard to match, but Tarzan has been around for almost 100 years in many incarnations. It would be interesting to see what Hollywood would do with it in today's day & age.
shareI can see it now. A Michael Bay and Jerry Bruckheimer film staring Ben Afleck as Tarzan... Kiera Knightly as Jane.
Movie opens; East African Coast 1891. A cannon firing on a small ship carrying Clayton's mother and father. Hand to hand combat ensues on aboard the ship and Clayton Sr. fights valiantly to protect his pregnant wife. The entire crew is killed except for the captain who is seriously wounded but he manages to steer the burning ship and escapes into the mist. Only to hit a reef, leaving a large hole in the port side.
Cut to jungle, [Celine Dion plays in the background]; A young ape played by Helena Bonham Carter finds her new born baby is dead but she still clutches onto it... refusing to accept the truth.
[Camera zooms in to show a single tear falling down her check as she holds the dead infant to her chest]
I guess that Tarzan & the Lost City (1998) was utterly forgettable then. Was thinking of renting it but since no one here even bothered to mention it, it's not a promising sign. It's as if it had never been made... hmmm?
shareI wouldn't say it's forgettable. It's not as good as Greystoke, but it has the feel of a 1950s or -60s Tarzan film. He's had a chance to adapt to civilization by the time this takes place, but it's really a dumbed-down retelling of Burroughs' Opar stories. The apes are barely shown and when you catch a glimpse are more like wookiees, and not half as convincing as in Greystoke. I think it's an okay movie, if you really like the character of Tarzan. It would have been better if the mangani were more believable and La and the beastial inhabitants of Opar were included.
